Robert Beltran

Why didn`t the producers fire Robert Beltran?
1. I think they noticed that there was a very big fanbase of fans who liked/adored him (Chakotay). When I became a fan of Voyager in 2005 (only because I recognised RB in Caretaker) I searched the net about him. And 5 years after Voyager`s ending there still were many, many fansites about Robert Beltran - various RB shrines; Robert Beltran Estrogen Brigade; some Inofficiell Fansites; RAB; ...- I don`t know all of the names. Most of the sites went down over the last years.
2. The relationsship between Janeway and Chakotay was /is very importend for many fans. And I think the producers knowed it. I know, many fans would have been very upset about Voyager without the tension between J and C.

I can hear (not necessarely agree with) Robert Beltran's frustration concerning the treatment of his Chakotay's character but I could too say the same about Kate Mulgrew and/or Ethan Philipps, whose the characters were damn & seriously damaged through the years too : Janeway was often a dismissed or belittled as a woman in her leadership role with ridiculous moments like short-sighted decision making and poor choices... even if all Captains had their moment ( from TOS, TNG, DS9 to Entreprise! As for Neelix, the poor guy was considered a pedophile because of his propension to spend a lot time with VERY young people, firstly with Kes during 3 seasons then with Naomie Wildman (and all others children on board) during 4 seasons and his excess of smile and good humor!

However, we never heard/read any public critics from them during the 7 seasons of the show, because they were well aware of the chance they had to be there, on a long run show and generously paid.
-> The only time where Mulgrew turned to the press, was at the end of S5, when she declared wanting to spend more time with her family even if it meant to leave the show, when her repeated requests to rearrange her schedule failed ... and it worked because well, I guess that UPN/producers perfectly knew that 1) her decision to quit was not a threat in the air and 2) she has always cooperated with everyone from the beginning to all of her business responsibilities/obligations on & outside sets.
-> As for Philipps, his leaving at the beginning of S7 was not a big deal because it was led intelligently: Philips thought having been around his character - opinion shared by producers, but Neelix was quite popular too so, I'm sure UPN's executives and producers would have found a way to keep the actor until the end. Plus I don't doubt that the actor was maybe a little frustrated to see that there would be no chance of improvement in his character but well, his departure from the show has gone however quite smoothly so, if Beltran wanted to leave, it wasa feasible solution. Some others ST actors did before without drama.

Now, tell me what Robert Beltran's unprofessionnal attitude (critics in the medias & behaviour on/out) brought him?! Nothing of what he expected/wished for that matter, right?! = more money for sure but no noticeable change in the treatment of his character, no say in Endgame's script and I'd add that he was forced to beg the production for something, whatever, to do in the finale => Result: it was given to him, a ridiculous storyline like a nonsensical romance with the culptural blonde beauty at the end, what is rather light if you want my opinion for a lead actor who is supposed to play the brave, wise, experienced and loyal First Officer on a vessel which seeks to make its way in an area infested by Borg Cubes!
And the worst in this story is that Beltran trained with him, Jeri Ryan, who didn't requested anything, damaging in passing, the positive evolution & strength of Seven's character, which reflected since her arrival on board to just become the tall and luscious blonde with whose Chakotay will leave Voyager! How sad!

I also admire him for having the guts to tell the truth about some not so nice people.
^agreed, that's one reason why I wouldn't go out of my way to talk to Mulgrew, despite being a fan of her performance. Would've loved to meet her circa '97 but have heard way too many negative things at this point.

I won't go too into this since it is a Beltran thread but interestingly, she has become a bit more humble the past 4 years. Though yeah she's definitely acting on stage. She's not such a huge as she puts on. But she doesn't deny her nature. I wanted to share what she said in response to: Do your kids know how cool you are? KM: no. Alec digs me. Ian...he loves me, but he finds me a quarrelsome person. (Softly) and I don't blame him.
She knows...and boy 97 to 2013 I might have agreed. But she might be worth another chance *shrugs*

I wasn't referring to Mulgrew in my previous post but to some people in charge of the show.
As for Mulgrew, I haven't seen so many negative things about her.

I've heard she hated Jeri Ryan.

I believe Mulgrew and Ryan have kissed and made up since their warring days on the show. I believe their reconciliation was at a fairly recent Star Trek Convention. At least, I hope it was genuine and not a facade put on to appease the Trek fans in the audience.

"Distant Origin" gifted Beltran with terrific Chakotay moments. His plea to Odala was heartfelt and compelling, and his unease at her final admonition to not be seen again was real. His was the voice of reason that fell on deaf ears. It's my favorite Chakotay story, and I wish Beltran had been provided with such strong material consistently.

I know nothing of his politics of the series, yet I enjoy his contribution all the same.

The problem with Chakotay is that he's improbable. Like the ridiculous assumption that his people had no language of their own. I mean we know that humanity reached the American continent very late in its history long after homo-sapiens appeared and that language had existed for hundreds of millennia back then so why invent this stupid insulting and racist detail?

I liked the character Chakotay even though, as someone else said, he never evolved beyond 2nd in command and Native American...**crickets**...but I was surprised to read all the negative things the actor said about the show...does seem a little ungrateful.

If there is one that should have been angry with the show, it's Garrett Wang. His character was often used as comic relief, in a ridiculous way.

G. Wang has especially been lucky that UPN insisted to keep him in the show because of his popularity with women (cf to his election to the most sexy man title) while producers wanted to fire him after having repeatedly sanctioned him..., what he never boasted in conventions, prefering highlight the faults in others like producers, writers and problems between Mulgrew and Ryan).
Ultimately, it was Jennifer Lien who was sacrificed.

Even if Wang's character, Harry Kim, was never promoted (for a blue just released of the academy, he was rather lucky to get a seat in senior crew's meetings!), I think that he kissed and was kissed more than most of the other characters (even Seven offered herself, that was not nothing!), including Chakotay! :D

I think Ghislaine means Harry participated in kissing more than Chakotay did.

Are we sure that she was sacrificed? Because I heard that Jennifer Lien developed an allergy to makeup and specifically her ears and that would be why they changed her hairdo in the later episodes to hide them. I that case, maybe she left of her own accord.

Beltran appeared very honest on the lack of progression in his character and others while everything was going to Kate and Jeri, and Picardo. It must've been frustrating during the first 3 seasons of Voyager for him and with the firing of Jennifer, and the inclusion of the big - boob - bombshell, Beltran threw up his hands and said, "F^ck this!" I appreciate an actor who doesn't just collect a paycheck but has a personal investment in the character.

Well, I did read Beltran talked smack about Mulgrew's elaborate parties. It must've been something.
