Except, like it or not...,
The first Season was specifically about aspects of the Federation/Klingon relationship during this particular time period, that we had only heard innuendo's about before DISCOVERY came along.
Leaving out the Klingons, would have been exceptionally difficult (if not impossible) to do.
Season 2 seems so far, to be going in a direction of having the Klingon's be much less prevalent, but we are still in the time period where even on TOS, it was said that they were extremely antagonistic toward the Federation.
So much so that war was on the brink of breaking out again.
I would imagine that with the advent of Pike and Spock being added to the story line, there will be a much bigger focus on other things, but again, the Klingons will always be lurking in the background just because that is what they are so good at doing.
