Except, like it or not...,
The first Season was specifically about aspects of the Federation/Klingon relationship during this particular time period, that we had only heard innuendo's about before DISCOVERY came along.
Leaving out the Klingons, would have been exceptionally difficult (if not impossible) to do.

Season 2 seems so far, to be going in a direction of having the Klingon's be much less prevalent, but we are still in the time period where even on TOS, it was said that they were extremely antagonistic toward the Federation.
So much so that war was on the brink of breaking out again.

I would imagine that with the advent of Pike and Spock being added to the story line, there will be a much bigger focus on other things, but again, the Klingons will always be lurking in the background just because that is what they are so good at doing.

And there is nothing wrong with the Klingons lurking in the background. I just don't see the need to make them the focus always, as Trek has want to do TNG going forward.

I would imagine it's because they are a very popular Trek Villain and at the time of TNG, someone/something was needed to be the antagonist due to Roddenberry's edict about Federation Folks being so nice as to not argue with each other.

I mean they said in the first episode it had been like 50/75+ years since starfleet last encountered the Klingons, so we kinda just picked up in the story where stuff gets interesting.
I’m gonna be annoyed if the Klingons become the “VOY Borg” of DISCO. I’d space out their appearances so it’s a pleasant surprise when they show up

It is interesting how omnipresent Klingons are in the Trek franchise. In addition to what I said about Enterprise season 3 being the only one in all Trek with no Klingons, I decided to look into the movies, and Beyond is the only movie to not include any Klingons or Klingon imagery at all.

For a breakdown of all the movies:
TMP has Klingons in the opening scene fighting V'Ger.
TWOK features Klingon ships in the Kobayashi Maru.
Klingons are the villains of TSFS.
TVH takes place aboard a captured Klingon ship, and features a Klingon Ambassador at the start.
Klingons are stalking Kirk/the Enterprise in TFF.
TUC is all about making peace with the Klingons.
All the TNG movies have a Klingon in them, Worf. Generations also has the Duras Sisters.
Trek XI has Klingon ships in the Kobayashi Maru. Klingons were also featured in deleted scenes.
STID has Klingons and Qo'nos.

Klingons also don't appear in the second season of The Animated Series. Looks like we might not get any Klingons in Short Treks either.

Anyway, if we're including Worf appearances, then the only other species (aside from Humans) that have more seasonal and film appearances are the Vulcans:
- All of TOS and TAS and all the TOS movies (and the Kelvin ones) thanks to Spock
- TNG S1 (Savar), S2 (Selar), S3 (Sarek), S4 (extra in QPid), S5 (Spock), S6 (T'Pan), S7 (Taurik), Generations (child on Ent-D), FC (Solkar), Insurrection (various crew), Nemesis (wedding guest)
- DS9 S1 (J.G. Hertzler's captain), S2 (Sakonna), S3 (Mirror Tuvok), S4 (T'Lara), S5 (admiral in Rapture), S6 (Sitak), S7 (Chu'lak)
- All VOY, thanks to Tuvok
- All ENT, thanks to T'Pol
- STD S1 (Sarek), S2 (Spock)

Vulcans might not appear in Short Treks.

They were not seen in season 1 or 3 of Enterprise.

And probably most of Voyager.

They’re not in DSC either, unless you want to count the emblem being seen in the background of the season 1 finale.

The thing is: "Vulcans" and "Klingons" are probably two of the most popular, well-known sci-fi species at all, rivallig "Predators" and "Aliens" in their pop-cultural penetration. They sure as hell are going to use them, because - like copyrights - if they don't, other SF shows will try to mimick them.

Right now, no "serious" SF show can dare to introduce a species of "compassionate logicals" or "honor-based warriours" without them being immediately compared to Vulcans or Klingons. And Star Trek would like to keep it that way...

I always thought it was more a case of being galactic neighbours: If you're German, you're more likely to run inte French or Italian peple and politics than, say, Japanese. If you're Canadian, you're probably having to deal more the the U.S. than with South Africa.

Thus the Federation runs more often into Klingons and Romulans, and more rarely into the Dominion or the Borg - which are far bigger powers, but also way further away. And species of a similar size that far away (like the Krenim, or maybe the Hirogen) would have had no contact at all, were it not for VOY crossing their territory.

Romulan ships are in season 2 of TOS, The Deadly Years.

And probably most of Voyager.

Seasons 2 and 6 are Voyager's only seasons without Romulans. There also aren't any Romulans in seasons 1 and 2 of DS9.

Again, the first season centered around the Klingon war, so I’d say they’d have to be there for that, right?

We’ll see if they’ll continue to be a constant presence in season 2, by the looks of the trailers it might go that way, thus my initial comment.

Hey man, good for you. Seriously, I’m glad you expect more from CBS than the product we got. Hopefully it will get better because of people like you who feel that way and make their opinions heard.

For me bland and uninspired is Q coming to badger Picard about his choice of underwear every 6 episodes, but that’s just my opinion, and you won’t find me in the TNG thread ranting about it to anybody who doesn’t feel that way.

Hey, the way I look at it is that if I enjoyed it as much as I did, yet the relentless naysayers are "right" and there's a tremendous amount of room for improvement, the future is extremely bright for people like us.

I haven't liked a Trek series this much since DS9 (and there were three seasons of that that were pretty blah as well), and that was 20 years ago. If DSC is the first Trek product in 20-some-odd years that I actually have considerable passion for...and it has "tremendous opportunity for improvement " we indeed have reason to be excited.

Precisely so. Just because I enjoyed S1 doesn't mean I don't see room for growth and development. I see those changes as nothing but positives.
