News New Season 2 Commercial

They aren't. The Klingons were badly over used in the 90's/early 2000's. I don't think anyone would have missed them if they hadn't been there..

I disagree wholeheatedly. The best work done on the Klingons was due to Ron Moore's efforts on TNG and DS9. Prior to him, the Klingons were just shadowy bad guys who were not really fleshed out. He gave them a full culture and mythos - making them by far the most well-developed species as a race in Trek history.

Everything Voyager did with them (barring Barge of the Dead, which was actually based on an old Moore script for Worf) and virtually Enterprise did with them was garbage though.

I disagree. There was plenty of development prior to Moore's arrival ("Heart of Glory", "The Icarus Factor", "A Matter of Honor", "The Emissary"). That doesn't count any development that Worf got during the first two seasons. If anything, Moore turned them into a one note culture.

At the end of the day, the Klingons simply weren't needed in Discovery.

It is interesting how omnipresent Klingons are in the Trek franchise. In addition to what I said about Enterprise season 3 being the only one in all Trek with no Klingons, I decided to look into the movies, and Beyond is the only movie to not include any Klingons or Klingon imagery at all.

For a breakdown of all the movies:
TMP has Klingons in the opening scene fighting V'Ger.
TWOK features Klingon ships in the Kobayashi Maru.
Klingons are the villains of TSFS.
TVH takes place aboard a captured Klingon ship, and features a Klingon Ambassador at the start.
Klingons are stalking Kirk/the Enterprise in TFF.
TUC is all about making peace with the Klingons.
All the TNG movies have a Klingon in them, Worf. Generations also has the Duras Sisters.
Trek XI has Klingon ships in the Kobayashi Maru. Klingons were also featured in deleted scenes.
STID has Klingons and Qo'nos.

I don't know. I never was a fan of the TNG/DS9-era space barbarians.
My favourite iteration of the Klingons was in both TOS and the TOS movies. My absolute favourite are those in "The undiscovered country" - where they absolutely come across as a multi-layered, cultural, violent society. Most notably - in all instances of klingons I really like the never actually talk about "honor", but their actions imply an archaic honor system.

Also, they work IMO a lot better as a reactionary, militaristic but fully developed dictatorship ("Empire"), than these West-Side-Story gang-like "houses" in eternal conflict.... They should have never posed a serious threat to the Federation in a state like this.

The art people went into overdrive recreating the Klingons, seems the writers went to a bar and got drunk.

I don't know. They seem to be Trek's, Daleks to me. Even more so than Vulcans and Romulans or even modern big fan favorites with the Borg and Carddisians. I do agree they haven't been used well in awhile. Not since DS9 but then DS9 ended awhile ago so I can see why they might think people might want more. I do think their wasn't a desire to see them as much as we have or have a main arc around them though.

TUC Klingons are also my favorite. Everything is perfect about them, down to the way they speak the language. But I think that being able to compare DSC era Klingons eventually becoming the TUC Klingons makes the overall depiction of Klingons more interesting.

Further evidence that we don't need any more Klingons.

Your view of Star Trek is invalid :nyah:

Actually, I wasn't really big on Klingons being the big bad for the first season either. In fact, I wasn't really big on there being a BIG BAD to begin with! But whatever. At least we got some new Star Trek.

I'll ignore that in favor of that fact that I'm glad for new Trek too ;)

Well, in-universe it would be really difficult to accept the absence of Klingons. If there were no Klingons in a show or a season, why would there be humans? Both are prominent star travelers in that universe.

VOY level contrivances would be needed to leave the Klingons completely out of the picture. Which is different from not using Klingons dramatically in every episode or season or spinoff. They could just be there, too. It's not as if every episode with humans in it is about humans specifically, either.

It really wouldn't.
The universe is huge. I can easily imagine not running into Klingons. TOS managed it for 72 of 79 episodes.
Exactly.
