I will reiterate what I said earlier.
Series rankings: TNG (by a hair), TOS,(small gap), DS9, (large gap), VOY/ENT (dead heat). Too early to rank DSC.
Best era/seasons: TOS 1-2, TNG 3-7, DS9 4-7, VOY 4, ENT 3-4, VOY 3.
Ranking of first seasons: TOS (by a country mile); DSC, VOY, ENT, (gap), DS9, TNG.
A couple salient points when comparing DSC S1 to the others.
One is that it lacked a great episode. Even poor seasons of the others had a great one (Duet), with the possible exception of TNG S1.
I thought the best episodes were "Context is for Kings", "Choose Your Pain", and the Pavho episodes. Not sure I would call any of them great.
The non-episodic nature of the season had the positive effect of keeping things interesting and I found myself generally enjoying & looking forward to the show. But on the downside, there was also usually something left hanging or unawswered after each episode, so that really fulfilling/great episode was harder to come by.
The length of the season is the other salient point. DSC had 15 episodes. TOS had 29, not counting The Cage. Nearly double. TNG S1 had 25. DS9 S1 20. VOY S1 had only 16, so that is comparable. ENT S1 had 26.
Even if the quality (average wise) is slightly higher, should there not be a penalty for brevity? Somewhat? I at least tended to just think of a season as good or bad and move on. But if you get down into the weeds on keeping score, should that be the case? Size matters. A great double CD is a lot better than a great single. White Album is the best Beattles for this very reason. Ditto Physical Graffiti for Led Zep.
YMMV, of course.
