You really need to learn how rumours and reality are actually connected.

Io9 is pretty click baiting and they will report anything to get you to click on an article.
EDITED TO ADD: fucking hell, IO9 isn’t reporting it. They are literally saying Starburst is reporting it. A website reporting someone else’s reporting doesn’t add more weight. Ridiculous.

Things being repeated over and over is how things gathers steam. Granted their is proaby some wishful-thinking like you said as well but sometimes they feel more legit than others and this one feels possible.

It’s the well known wait and bonus Moffat Capaldi eps background that makes it seem..possible. I can’t believe those two worked on and stuck together a Christmas special so Who wouldn’t lose its slot....and the new team seem to have lost or given up the slot. That’s not a good sign.
You do realize that io9 reports rumors all of the time and makes it clear every time that they're rumors, which often don't turn out to be true, right?
This is who and sf rumour in general. They work differently here. I cite the ‘junked tardis set’ circa 1988, and the non-announcement of its cancellation.
What do you mean about slot? If wanted couldn't they just air a Christmas Special next season?

The Beeb higher ups are in charge of that. Christmas afternoon/ evening is probably the single most important slot of the year. Practically a captive audience...no shops open, everyone indoors and too full of stuffed bird, booze and quality street to move. Moffat is on record as saying if they didn’t do one they would lose the slot....hence the suddenly delayed regeneration, and persuading Capaldi back for one more special. So...either the Beeb didn’t let Who keep he slot, or the other publicised ‘we couldn’t think of a Christmas story’ meant they lost the slot, or Chib and co just couldn’t get it done in the right style or time. Frankly, I find it hard to believe that after this many years, the Beeb would strip Who of the Christmas slot. It’s about as sure a thing as Only Fools was. Which means we now look to the production team.

Older journalists did the recycle news thing too? I suppose there always were a fair few ‘as reported over in the xxxx’ stories, but they never seemed to chase the tail quite so much. Mind you, io9 is now almost as bad as kotaku. I miss joystiq. And magazines frankly. Maybe print media could stage more of a comeback. A rumour would have to hang around a while to make it into print, and usually be a footnote.
It is, however, a rumour I would not be surprised to find out was true. Not in the slightest.

There’s probably more reported rumours that were true, or at least part true, than reported rumours that weren’t in who’s case. (The pyramids episode with cyber men rumoured ep with leaked designs? I think we all know which episodes those later became. Matt Smiths cameo in Capaldi era? John Simms reappearance? Various bits of casting? I would not even be surprised if it’s later revealed Kris Marshall was the face used in the held back regeneration from Capaldis last normal episode, even if it’s for the humdrum reason that they needed a face and he was in the cafeteria and since he has his union card did it for a laugh.)
One way or another, I'm sure the production team could have gotten the episode done a week earlier if they needed to make a Christmas slot. The BBC airing it on New Years instead doesn't seem like something you can reasonably lay at the production team's feet.
Why? Because you don’t like the show anymore, so it’s a desirable outcome? Beyond that, why would they leave?

This is the challenge of free "news" websites. They want eyeballs, they NEED eyeballs to have ad revenue. So, they will post anything and everything to get a click.
Sure, it's a possibility that we have another Eccleston, but, I really really think he is such an outlier, I just don't see it happening again. I would be very surprised of either Chibnall or Whitaker leaving. Ratings are up. Chibnall has charted a new course, maybe some at the BBC aren't happy there hasn't been a Dalek, but, Chibnall has been proven correct, that will give him MORE power, not less.
I feel like the source of this rumor is disgruntled "fans" who want "their" Doctor Who back.
