In Tasmania, parent now have to opt in to have their child’s sex recorded on a birth certificate. This is a great change because it will mean that an intersex baby’s sex does not have to be recorded, and therefore the children can choose what sex they are when they are ready to, or they might decide to not select a sex at all.
I am shocked how many Australians have objected to this rather minor change. All it means is that parents will be asked on the registration form whether they want their child’s sex recorded. If they tick yes, they tick a box F or M, maybe there will be an I option as well. If they want they can tick no, and no sex will be recorded.
I am arguing with one guy about this. He says it is too much of a burden to expect parents to make. He said that they might be too tired or too excited to fill the form in correctly. I said if they are too tired they have a full 60 days to register the birth so maybe they can leave it for later.
