News Season One hitting DVD/Blu-Ray in November

I am sure there are many examples in this thread and countless other forums, folks will be talking about Blu-ray/4K/CDs etc and folks always have to come along, don't add anything to conversation but state that they stream everything like it is some unknown magic that only they are aware of. of course you stream everything, even people who buy discs stream most of their stuff. I don't buy anywhere near as many discs as say 15 odd years ago but my favourite films and TV shows still get bought. Lossless audio, less compression and extra features. Those new documentaries on TNG and Enterprise where some of the best extras I have seen. Plus I go to the extreme and rip everything (uncompressed) to my NAS and have my own sever of all my favourites.

Even if it was produced using traditional film you could still do a 4K transfer, the resolution of 35mm far exceeds that of HD and even 4K. In fact using a 2.8k camera has gimped a proper 4K transfer the best we can get is a 2K HDR transfer like most new modern movies.

It will still be better then the streaming version, you still get extras and lossless audio. The version on streaming sites will still come from the same master, and this is down to Paramount being cheap and not doing new transfers for the Blu-ray release. The new remaster of TWOK shows how good they can look.

Seems like a classic case of did not estimate demand properly.

 

Guess I'll be waiting a bit before ordering my copy then.

Eh, I'd rather listen to the commentaries myself.

 

I'm happy with the Blu-ray. To me it looks great and sounds great - better than CBS All Access.

I don't think it was ever 4K on Netflix. What probably happend was people so the HDR/DV-Logo and just automatically assumed it was 4K, eventhough it was just 1080p with an HDR/DV pass. It was the first think I checked each episode. On my Samsung 4K-TV if you start watching somethink via it's native Netflix-App and press the INFO-Button it shows the actual resolution and bitrate of the content your are just watching. When switching from Discovery to an acutal 4K-Netflix show the resolution went up to 2160p. Discovery always stayed at 1080p. It's annoying that this resolution/bitrate info can't be activated in other devices like the AppleTV or ShieldTV to my knowledge.

 

There are still many old posts online from people who saw the first 2 episodes in 2160p. Some even called up netflix to complain when it dropped to 1080.

You can access the resolution info on the playstation and xbox netflix apps so chances are you should be able to do it on most devices. Just a case of pressing every button (try down on the appletv)

Could simply be Netflix made a mistake tagging the first two episodes as 4K.

 

My DVD set just arrived. No plans to "binge-watch"; I'll take my time.

As it turns out, it looks like there won't be any audio commentaries. That's a disappointment.

 

If you play the disk backwards you can barely hear Jason Isaacs saying over and over again "Lorca is good. Lorca is good. Also watch the O.A."

Discovery is mastered at 2K. No 4K version exists. Even most VFX heavy modern movies aren't done in 4K.

 

Bought my copy at a local brick&mortar for $39.95. I don't mind supporting a real store for five bucks once in a while. Cost per episode is still cheaper than the $100 TNG-ENT sets I bought back in the day.
Watched the first two episodes and the special features on disc one. Looks and sounds good, better on my home theater system than streaming on my computer. Features are on par with what has been included on previous Trek sets.
My partner (a converted semi-Trekker) is getting into Discovery more this second time around. It goes well with classic horror movies we have been watching, with the darkly lit scenes and tension in the air. We will have to watch two episodes a week to meet the season two premiere in January. That's as fast as the two of us 'oldsters' can binge together.
I am glad to have new Trek on a semi-regular basis, and it does uphold The Great Bird's principles despite being all modern and edgy. Long live Discovery!

 

Picked up the blu-ray earlier today. Planning on starting later tonight.

 

About half an hour ago, I watched every episode. For the first thirty seconds. Just long enough to check the total running time of each episode. I probably won't get to even the first one until at least Thanksgiving, possibly not until the weekend. Too much other stuff to do.
