^ Fair enough. I must admit I never liked the history or ‘Earth’ stories in Trek either. Not sure why.
I think Who gets away with it more due to not really being set anywhen while Trek did sometimes suffer due to being set in the twenty whatever century and doing an episode set in our past. It felt like this isn't what we signed up for. Not that I'm complaining outright as I did enjoy some of them. I recall little green men being a decent giggle. Though I could be wrong.
Plus getting back on subject I think it helps make the space ships and advanced civilisations feel a little more unique. Other wise they could end up running together sortof.

I'm not sure if I like the earth based stuff more or the space stuff more. I just know I like the Doctor being zanny and funny and even kind of a snob or someone that is hard to relate to because they are a alien and more complex than us humans. The Doctor has way more experience and is way smarter than humans. That would naturally make anyone seem kind of alien to a regular human being. Whitaker has shown this at times when been allowed to. I want to see more of it from her. My favorite stuff with her is still from the season opener. I mean she felt very active in that episode doing all sorts of things and things that are even hard to understand what she is doing. I want them to try and recapture that feeling with her.

I agree that she felt the most Doctor~ish in the opener.

I've realised what this series reminds me of and this may not sit well with some people. Remember that episode where the moon was an egg and covered in spiders. The one that felt like it was a pitched, original radio drama in the vein of the twilight zone or outer limits but got reworked into a Doctor Who episode. That's sort of what this series feels like. Though much better. It feels like the Doctor is kind of our tour guide or lift to all these places and stories rather than the star of all these stories. The spiders in the hotel was a sub par Torchwood script and the rest while more who seem to focus on the companions or ordinary people in these trying and unusual situations. Would the episode aboard the space ship have been worse by scrapping the Doctor and companions and replacing them with some more patients and letting the female doctor take control with help from the major and her brother and others?

I have a friend who's father's parents were Hindu, and then disowned him and cast him out of the family for marrying a Christian.
I know some people complain about the lack of a villain in the episode, but the villain is in plain sight. It's hatred without reason causing people to tear their own families apart and causing suffering for generations to come..

390 million people lived in India before the partition.

A million dead is a bruised bottom.
And if your family was part of the million, do you think you could find a way to sound less callous about it then? Not that it should require a personal connection to prevent you from being dismissive of the death of a million people.

Half way through and the virtue signalling is heavy handed. It feels like history lessons with back patting.

Given today’s political climate and leaders of the world saying their are “fine people on both sides” when one side are literally made up of Nazis, it seems history has been forgotten.

And Doctor Who has always been “virtue signaling.” (Ugh, what an Orwellian turn of phrase. I need to wash out my mouth)

That's just it though these history lessons give rise to people lecturing each other like moral overlords. Who wants that in their entertainment? It's a TV show not a documentary.

^^^ I don’t mind it in my entertainment which is probably why I enjoyed ‘The Highlander’ series so much.

Why can’t it be both? Why can’t it be both entertaining and offer something more thoughtful?

Do you really think there’s some moral legitimacy to racism and bigotry?

Maybe bigots SHOULD be lectured to.

Well if one of you main characters is racist or bigot you got to find something legit about it in order to give them some depth that goes beyond cartoon levels of complexity. The question should always be. How do I make this compelling from a dramatic point-of- view.

Granted with "Who" this is a show that really doesn't go the complex level of exploring issues. I have noticed it's more about finding a creative way to lecture in away that feels unique usually through a methphor that makes you think about a issue in a new way. Which means the Doctor needs to be connected to the story. Maybe the aliens should have been a real threat instead of red herring. Put some sci-fi into the story. Have Yaz fade away because the future is altered and the Doctor has to get involved to restore the future.
