News More Eaglemoss Discovery Starships

The Klingon QUGH (Disaster) CLASS is Issue #8...
It is an amusing bit of unintentional irony that this ship is called "Disaster", considering the generally negative consensus most fans have with the S1 Klingon vessels (and Klingons).
Huh so the Cardenas was another one of those scrapped Shenzhou designs.
He did mention one time that he made about 40-some designs, maybe more. I'm sure concept variations for the same vessel were included in that count. Remember the Nova class was originally the "Defiant Pathfinder" class concept for the Defiant back in DS9. Common practice to recycle concepts for secondary background ships.

And for hero ships - the Defiant was a recycled Mirror Universe / Bajoran tramp design, too...

Interesting to learn about the "deliberate pre-TOS weirdness" thing going on with the bridges, and the "testbed ship paint" idea behind the unusual paint patterns. Neither of the concepts really made it to the screen even if the results did.

I wonder what we learn about the names on p.14...?

Heh...
I didn't include that one on purpose.
Didn't think anybody would notice since I was just posting the pages with relevant pic's on them.

Jim Martin was asked to design a smallish civilian ship that could be used by freedom fighters - it was at one point supposed to be Mirror Sisko's ship, at another a Maquis ship, and was given features connecting it to existing alien DS9 designs (the top ring was common with the Wadi ship which may have been a Bajoran ship even originally and certainly became one later on, and with the Cardassian Hideki, while there were side sponsons with apparent guns on loan from the TNG Maquis raider design). Nothing ever came out of those plans, though, and the respective episodes either were not made, or were made without building a new ship.

Martin included the sketch in his bunch of pitches for the new hero ship Valiant, after the initial idea of a beefed-up runabout had been ditched. It was the only decidedly "non-Starfleet" one in the lot, but it was the one TPTB picked anyway...

That's by far the most attractive of the Klingon ship designs. Although the BoP is cool as a concept, and sort of fits the visual language of BoPs, it's not a beauty to behold. And those assorted two-nacelled, squashed, stretched and tormented D-7 lookalikes don't do a thing for me. But this baby looks both weird, gorgeous and strangely functional. Not to mention badass.

Looking forward to learning more about artist intent here. On screen, the "destroyer" seems to be the top dog in combat; STO seems to keep up that role, making the Qugh a capital ship towering over mere battlecruisers. Was that original intent? What's the supposed original scale?

Forgot to mention that there is some question as to whether the pic above is depicting the right orientation of the ship.
I haven't gone back to look at the episode it's in, but apparently this picture has the ship flying backwards.
When I get it, I'll post an actual pic of the Booklet cover to try and stem the confusion. (hopefully)

wait, how can we tell what direction it's flying? a handful of ships (22nd century romulan bird of prey, IKS negh'var, romulan shuttle, warp delta, etc) appear on the magazine cover flying away from the "camera" not toward it...

Of the seven starships released so far in the DISCOVERY line, only the USS KERALA (#3) & the Klingon BOP (#4) have been pictured facing (flying?) from Left to Right on their respective, accompanying Booklets.
The other five have all been depicted as facing (flying?) Right to Left.

The other problems with the QUGH pics above, are that it's shown facing in two different directions and the middle one appears to be upside down.
(either that or the first pic has the source light coming from the top and the second from the bottom??)

In contrast, while I only have 10 of the Original Trek E-M Line ships, they are ALL shown facing Left to Right on their booklets.
(and all of the many I have seen online, face the same way)

What's even weirder is that all of the outer boxes that the DISCOVERY Ships come in by subscription, display the actual models facing Right to Left.
(even the Kerala & the Klingon BOP)

Addendum:
All of the Discovery Booklets (so far) have the appearance of the ships flying Toward the viewer, not away.

Plus you can just watch episode 2 and see which way they warp in.

And I think one attacks the Gagarin in episode 4(?)
