Michael's humor is keeping it going, but I fear they've taken a wrong turn here.

I’m glad they gave us the resolution to Tahani’s issues with Camila even though it wasn’t as funny.

And I think it’s only one episode until we get back to the supernatural.

It isn't really a lie, he is an architect, just a very different type of architect.

Technically, a statement that is factually true but worded to be misleading is still a lie.

Just before a big election is the perfect time to witness that firsthand.

By the way, all the criticism about Good Place being too normal and not weird and supernatural enough, how is it nobody has said it?

    Good Place, YA BASIC! ;)

I'm glad it's not just me. The show has felt off all season and although the last couple of episodes have been improvements, it's not by enough to fix things. I'm not sure what feels wrong about it except that somehow nothing feels relatable any more. When we got flashbacks to Earth in seasons 1 and 2, events were absurd but still grounded in a recognizable reality. People worried about money and roommates and how difficult it is to do the right thing all the time. But now characters are flitting hither and yon like it's nothing, facing few obstacles and learning nothing we haven't already seen them learn multiple times over. There needs to be some kind of fresh angle on the material and we're not getting it.

My feeling is we should be seeing events through Janet's perspective – she's got the most to lose not having her powers, and she' living among the real humans she was once programed to serve but not actually understand. That would be a hell of an angle, to get inside her POV for all of this.

We already got our dose of humans' perspective (season 1) and Michael's perspective (season 2), but unfortunately season 3 is largely a structural repeat of season 2 but with more flaws.

I wonder if they have made Janet too human. I get she learns everytime she's rebooted, but I forget that she is just a program. They briefly touched on her power loss in the premiere episode, but that seems to be something they have forgotten about as the season goes on.

They did address it a little bit last week.

Last week I voiced some frustration that the show was shifting away from what made The Good Place such a great show. This week they righted the ship so well, kind of like how Arrow righted there season on Monday. This episode was classic good place, and I loved every second of it. The determinism debate, Eleanor and Michael carrying the entire episode which was such a joy, and then that ending bringing back Shawn and Vicky. Really excited for where this season is going now.

Guys, bear with me for a minute.

Is it possible that Shaun, in his attempt to foil Michael’s plans, while posing as a gay intellectual named Kevin falls in love with a Brooklyn police captain and decides to stay on Earth and live as a human?

They righted the ship by having nearly the entire episode take place in Michael's neighborhood. That's the key takeaway here.

Agreed. It's not just that we got to see Michael's neighborhood but as Tomalak alluded to, they went back to the elements of the show in Michael's neighborhood that we've grown to love so much. They gave us a philosophical question. We got the wackiness with the mythical animal fair and the Tahani-Minotaur. We also saw a return of Chidi's classic indecisiveness with not being able to choose a puppy (although to be fair both puppies were very cute, so I think a lot of people would have had trouble picking one and I am sure that was part of the humor of the situation). We got some great banter between Eleanor and Michael. We got a nice tender moment when Eleanor and Chidi kiss. We saw Machiavellian Michael again. Overall, the ep just had all the elements that make The Good Place a great show.

And, The twist at the end with Shawn and Vicky definitely makes me want to see the next episode.

This one definitely felt the most like the first two seasons of all the season 3 episodes we've gotten so far.
The flashbacks to the fake Good Place were a lot of fun.
The philosophical stuff with Eleanor and Micheal was really good, it was nice to see them going back to this kind of stuff.
Shawn and Vicky ending up on Earth was a cool twist, and should hopefully bring a bit more of the supernatural stuff back into the show.
I'm getting frustrated, because I watch The Big Bang Theory and it ends after The Good Place starts. I've missed the very beginning of the last three episodes so far.

I know it's been suggested before that the guys aren't actually on Earth and it's just another simulation. I have to say that the repeated joke around "they film porn after we close" made me consider this again.

Well, aside from the serious conceptual issues of it being just another simulation, at this point that idea would require so much random deception that it just wouldn't make sense anymore. Not just the humans, but the Judge, the Doorman, Michael and Janet and all of the demons are all talking about/going to 'Earth'. If it were a trick, it would presumably be the Judge's doing, and maybe the Doorman was in on it, but the Demons found their way to earth on their own without using the Doorman, so I think we can pretty much put that theory to rest by now.

^Oh yes, if it is a simulation then it must be sophisticated enough to fool the demons too, but then the Judge is all powerful...

The Judge would have to know exactly what the Demons were planning to be able to fool them, though, because they went to Earth under their own power.
