Haven't seen this mentioned yet here, but Craft's "enemy" the V'draysh are actually a mispronounciation of "Federation" (verified by Chabon himself on social media here: https://i.imgur.com/hMaCVqr.jpg ).

So apparently the Federation does indeed still exist during this time. I guess Craft is part of some human colony that has broken off from the Federation for whatever reason (or was never part of it to begin with).

Probably the ancestors of that surly Bringloidi group from "Up The Long Ladder".

I wouldn't put it past them to have rejected the Federation just to be out on their own and they certainly had very different ways of pronouncing things.

It would just be the voice actress. I got the feeling that Zora, the character, developed and grew after being left alone for so long, she wouldn't call herself anything. I'm really not interested in seeing pre-sentient Zora, it seems like a waste of such of a great character. Just like B4. Oh no, Data died but don't worry about having an emotional impact on the audience, he has a backup twin brother who we'll never hear from again. It's like if Spock died and Nimoy showed up as Spock's secret twin Tpock.

WE have seen non-federation human colonies. Its not unthinkable folks would leave later on to make a non-Federation one. Its a pretty interesting concept of a war with a group of such colonies.

Exactly, I'm actually sort of surprised that we haven't seen this sort of thing in Trek before (as far as I can recall anyway). I guess any colony who might have a beef with the Federation are smart enough to refrain from conflict, knowing that they'd probably have little chance against them.

It was the Roddenberry rule. I can see a "alt" federation popping up too, a group of species and colonies with a defensive pact or something. All those other empires are not one species after all and after the Romulans fall, I can see something else gobbling them up. 800 years is a long, long time.

I wouldn't be surprised of we see ZORA on some background computer graphics, Disco's version of LCARS or PCAPS.

From "Battle of the Binary Stars" the computers in Disco have been smart. I can buy 1000 years evolving the reasoning computer Burnham talked into freeing her from the Shenzhou brig into Zora.

I love the idea that Craft's people are in conflict with a future Federation. We already saw this happening in the 24th century with the Maquis. It's not hard to believe that the Alcorian humans may have begun as separatists.

It's got me wondering if 'Calypso' is a 15 minute attempt at world building for an inevitable jump and permanent stranding in the 33rd century.

This was the best episode of Discovery so far, by a long shot. And it didn't even involve any of the regular characters. Just a testament to the power of good writing. Here's to Michael Chabon, and may he be more involved in Trek to come!

I hope so. The day we can't ask dumb questions anymore is the day we will stop learning.

You are at this point the nth person writing it's a hommage to Homer's Odyssee. Now, I have read the Odyssee. A long time ago, so the memory is a bit fuzzy. But I don't really feel that big of a connection. Now, of course I see lots and lots of references to 2001: A space Odyssee (having a main ship called "Discovery" only being one of them). But that movie did actually follow events of the Odyssee pretty close, at least so far that I - not an expert on it - noticed the similarities.

So, just asking for a dumb friend (okay, me...): Could you elaborate a little what exactly are the big connections of this short to Homer's original Odyssee?

others have already answered that while I was asleep due to time zones, so, basically, what they said: war veteran Odysseus/Craft, on his decade long voyage home to his family - his wife Penelope/(no name given in Star Trek) and his 11 year old son Telemachos (no name given in Star Trek) - landed on the island Ogyga/the USS Discovery, where the nymph Calypso/the AI Zora develops feelings for the hero and vice versa until "the crafty Odysseus"/Craft remembers his family and the nymph/the AI has to let him go.

it's a pretty 'on the nose' adaptation, leaving out the Greek Gods of course as well as any malevolent intentions and acts by Calypso/Zora

Good episode, but still make me some mental noise that the Discovery technology is so far advanced than even the Voyager or the Sovereign class on the 24 century.

That is not logical, spock could say.

Was a good episode.

With the exception of a Jim Cawley fanfilm from a while back, there is not a 100 foot tall Guardian of forever, ready to send Star Ships into the past and future...

I'm thinking that the ship went to the past, then after their adventure, the crew could get back to the future, more easily than a giant Star Ship.
