I'll give props to the VFX team as I'm sure turning a scene from Funny Face into a 3D render (even on a 2D screen) took some time and imagination.

Overall, I liked it more than I thought I would once I saw the trope they were going with.

I think it's kind of funny this was a strange, futuristic human on a familiar spaceship. While usually the trope is exactly the other way 'round.

Also, yeah, while canonically I treat this as a "what if" (like the Ent-J, I don't expect this depiction as unchangeable), this doesn't really feel like a "what-if" Trek story. It honestly feels more like a very solid piece of stand-alone, high concept science fiction entertainment, which just by chance uses the Star Trek production line to get made. Which is kind of great.

Finally saw it. Really enjoyed it. Gave it an 8, would have been higher if there was some explanation of what the hell was going on. Why was Discovery in that time period? I'm guessing we'll get the explanation in a future episode.

It was NOT rushed like the Tilly one. I liked Craft. I liked the AI. I just wanted some payoff as to why Discovery was there. And strangely the Temporal Cold War came to mind, I don't know why.

Really hope we learn why Discovery was there, in good condition, so far in the future.

And if this guy Chabon is in charge of the Picard series I am now looking way more forward to it.

Did anyone notice the picture of the ship on the wall around 11 mins in? It's the same class as one of the ships from the Battle of the Binary Stars. and its registry is NCC-1413, I can't make out a name. Now that clearly wasn't put there for no reason, and I doubt it was a mistake. I assume it must be significant in some way.

If I had to speculate on how Discovery ends up like this, I would say at some point in the season finale the ship is abandoned, and somehow the crew has to be sent in to the distant future, leaving the ship to wait for them. The producers have said that this was the only season they could tell the Spock story, perhaps because they're leaving the 23rd century.

It’s the U.S.S. Shran, and it’s been there since season 1.

Most of the ships destroyed at that battle are hanging on the walls of the mess hall.

I'm guessing those images were added to the mess hall on Mirror-Lorca's order/advice. That they haven't been taken down speaks perhaps of other factors...?

Okay, that makes sense. I don't remember seeing them. I was thinking that they were a clue about something. Perhaps that Craft was actually on a different ship.

One of the things that took me by surprise and that I really liked was that there was not twist, no betrayal, no shocking reveal. It makes a nice change of pace.

Don't count on it. This is likely never going to be brought up. This feels more like someone came up with a great idea for a story but it wasn't in anyway related to Trek. They thought the idea was too good to pass up on and ham-fisted the Trek elements (sets and props) as this is what they have to work with.

Seems like the most plausible as the other three shorts are Discovery related (Tilly, Saru, and Mudd).

The whole point of Star Trek was that you could tell any kind of story you want, and bring it into the Star Trek universe. If it's a story worth telling, find a way to tell it.

I think it's kind of sad that people can't enjoy a wonderful little story that was almost perfectly written, acted, and presented without getting all wrapped around the axle with ponderous questions.

This is an isolated story. The point isn't to understand every little thing and how it all weaves into the intricate tapestry of Trek history. It's to enjoy the story. Period.

Glad that most people seem to have gotten it though!

If they really wanted this to be an isolated story it should have taken place on another ship. Putting it on Discovery ties those questions to the show. Is it relevant to DSC? Or is it another possible future episode that really isn't cannon because it may or may not happen or may or may not be in this universe?

Would you be disappointed if these loose threads tie into DSC season 2?

I am not able to watch it but I watched the trailers and read the summaries.

And by that alone I can tell it is an effective and touching sci-fi story. It works as part of the Trek universe but also as stand-alone, high-concept Sci-Fi.

One of the interviews stated the author would like Craft to relive Homer’s Odyssey. That’d be cool, but I’m also content if “Calypso” doesn’t receive a sequel. It doesn’t have to tie into anything.

Was that shuttle at the end the standard Disco-type?

The design was the same, but the colour appeared to be different. It's has rust coloured highlights instead of red.

I could say this episode was sweet and touching, and a perfect little standalone mini adventure. I could say the idea of Discovery/Zora being alive reminds me very much of what Doctor Who did with the TARDIS in the Matt Smith era, and also reminded me of Moira, the Enterprise's AI in the Diane Duane novels.

But instead I will just say: Hey @Tuskin38 DISCOVERY'S HOLOGRAMS ARE SOLID I WAS RIGHT!!!!!!!!!:nyah::nyah:

^ That makes me snicker.

FWIW, at Starfleet Academy in 2256, the Klingons in the holodeck are as solid as anything, and you can punch them. (STO: DSC Starfleet tutorial)

DISCOVERY'S HOLOGRAMS ARE SOLID I WAS RIGHT!!!!!!!!!:nyah::nyah:
Rudimentary free-floating interactive tactile holograms have already been invented, so it would look pretty silly not to have them 240 years in the future.

Some of the ones in the second video aren't actually holograms, but there are several examples.

Except she clearly wasn't solid. Their dance was a carefully choreographed act he put on for her benefit, studying and then miming Astaire's moves as she performed Audrey's. Its lack of true physicality was demonstrated by his walking right through her when he left the room, shattering the illusion. Great scene.

(Plus, if she were shown to be solid, that could readily be attributed to a millennium of "evolution" anyway.)

But they clearly do not have them in the TOS era, and early Next Gen explicitly makes them a new and amazing invention.
