Well, since EVERYONE on the bridge was watching, which ones do you think were on duty and which ones off duty? Or perhaps you're saying that no one on the bridge was on duty and the bridge doubles as a break room on those occasions when all bridge officers are off duty and no one is running the ship.

But, come to think of it, the bridge doubling as a break room sounds right up the The Orville's season 1 alley.

Not sure why so many feel the need to defend this scene. I didn't say that it sucked or anything, nor did I say it wasn't funny. But what I did say is that the Seinfeld scene is one of the main reasons season 1 was a parody rather than a dramedy. But it's only season 1. Perhaps the show will pivot away from slap stick, toilet humor to a more subtle take and an actual attempt at better drama.

Or as I like to call it "the majority of season 1."

The Orville should shoot for The Orville. In this case, it's part TNG, part MASH, part MacFarlane humor. I think it works, and I like how there is a lot of drama in it interspersed with comedy. Star Trek was often heavy handed *cough*letthatbeyourlastbattlefield*cough*, *hack*theomegaglory*, *wheeze*patternsofforce*wheeze*, but still made some fantastic episodes in its short three seasons.

I'm fine with that. I think they'll strike a solid balance of good drama mixed with some comic relief. Hell, I just love the idea that the crew likes to sit back and enjoy a beer after their shifts. It feels very human, and very relatable.

I think the show has moments were it goes into parody. This is one. It's making fun of the old idea of the viewscreen as a tv. That isn't really the overall tone of each episode though. I think lighthearted adventure series is a more accurate way to describe it's tone. That is basically what it is and that means it can sometimes do different things just like Trek. Sometimes your spoofing on something like watching "Seinfeld" on the viewscreen but sometimes it's a horror show like the Allura on the holodeck ep and sometimes it's social commentary like the episode about Bortus's child or the social media episode

It has many faces but it's usually lighthearted or not very graphic. I do think part of the reason the drama stuff is not taken serious is because people have problems with taking Seth McFarlande, serious as a actor. He's kind of like Woody Allen in that Woody Allen is perfect in a Woody Allen movie but you don't really see him as a REAL actor. McFarlande is the same. He is a great fit for the shows and movies he does and he can even expand on the type of shows he does but only he as a actor can fully work in that kind of enviroment for the most part. Except maybe in small comedy roles like he had in that movie about some people wanting to rob from a NASCAR race.

I agree. Picking maybe the best sitcom of all-time can cause problems. Someone might push a button on accident because they are rolling over in laughter and thus end up shooting a missle or turning off the gravity or something. It's better to watch a sitcom that will only make you chuckle at best but never anything else. I hear "Scrubs" was perfect for that.

That just makes it a comedy, not a parody. Parodies are making fun of specific elements of something, like all of the Star Trek elements in Galaxy Quest or Star Wars elements in Spaceballs, but The Orville never really goes after specific elements of Trek like that. It borrows elements from the Trek shows, and while it does use that stuff for jokes, the jokes aren't specifically about that stuff.

With the poster and the recent teasers, I get the feeling Sage will still be part of the show, maybe in a more supporting role. I'm looking forward to seeing the new members of the cast, especially Jessica Szohr.

I would love Orville novels, I can think of a few Star Trek novelists who could probably do a great job with it.

The show has parody elements but Star Trek isn’t what it’s parodying. It’s parodying the way humans behave.
