Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

Your choice, or imposed?
Bit of both. The pressure/reward ratio is messed up and is only set to get worse. There are hefty questions over the sustainability of the sector, but that’s true everywhere these days. And it’s become very apparent that some major issues I’m having can only be ameliorated by put up and shut up.

I think a change is overdue.

^ Change is often good in my experience. I have never stayed longer than 8 years at any workplace before moving on to the next one.
That’s good! I used to be a recruiter. We would always tell people never to stay in one job too long, for a few reasons. There’s only so much mobility you can have at one company, usually when you change jobs it’s for a promotion. Also you look more well rounded when you’ve been at a few different companies. One company on a resume could make someone look like they don’t have a lot of ambition.

Saying that also helped our chances at recruiting them :) hehe

Best of luck to you @Butternut Squash, I hope everything works out!

Eight years is about my record too. Two years is the average, did a lot of contracting while the economy tanked. It’s been four years in the current job, and I missed the only direct promotion opportunity. Many of my colleagues have been in post, or similar posts for 16 years.

I guess I'm not that ambitious but on the other hand, going off my experience, us longer serving types also bring a depth of historical knowledge about our (I mean the one I work for specifically) company which comes in useful a lot (as long as we don't resist changes which'll improve things anyway). At our place, we do have quite a lot of turnover in some departments, but much less so in others. I think most of my team are going on twenty years or longer. For the other departments, I'd argue that turnover is neccessary as it brings fresh ideas in for those roles.

I agree, it can totally depend on the industry and role, also some companies will pay to keep you there. I was just trained to look at it from a perspective of hiring. If you like and trust the company, it’s great to stick around. You should enjoy your job and like the people you work for.

I know someone who designed tech systems in the 90s, he was paid nearly a million dollars to sign a contract that he wouldn’t work for anyone else for the rest of his career. This was when these people were more difficult to find.

Indeed:) - We have a little of that with some software that is way too long in the tooth. As for our turnover, some of it seems almost incestuous as people join, go and come back or turn up somewhere else we know. For their section, everybody seems to know everybody - even if what they deal with seems to be fairly widespread throughout the world:D.

If/when they do come back, they typically get teased about it though:D

People who are trying too hard to convince you that they are right are really trying to convince themselves.

Yesterday, as I'd mentioned in the One-Word thread, I was feeling oddly good. I was worried that would all fall apart by the evening, and at about 7:30 I started feeling cold. By 8pm I was shaking uncontrollably even though I was wearing a t-shirt, sweatshirt, and coat under a warm blanket with the house temp at about 76°F (Way warmer than usual).

At about 10pm or so, I was quite delirious and began envisioning myself as some weirdly-shaped knife-thread screw and in some strange game of Operation, I had to twist the fever off of myself without touching my "threads". By 10:30 or so I was shirtless and sweating, but still delirious and could not get myself to move until about midnight with some prodding.

This morning I tossed my cookies (though, to be fair, it was just clear liquid as all I'd had was water).

Right now, I'm disoriented, but feeling overall okay. I hope it maintains.

I'm going to need to break down and go to the Emergency Room if this keeps up. I already owe them money, but something's gotta give.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of my diagnosis of type one diabetes. I sometimes wonder what life would be like if I didn't have the condition.
