Boss Monster

Out of curiosity, is anyone else familiar with the board/card game series Boss Monster? It's an affectionate nod to vintage games, with the twist that you normally play as the boss characters instead of the heroes. Pretty fun.

I just picked up the Rise of the Minibosses expansion.

I played Boss Monster a few years ago, but it didn't do much for me. It might be because I am not much of a video game person.

Hope you enjoy the game.

The concept is cute and as a lover of retro games it definitely appeals to me, but the mechanics are fiddly and poorly thought out. I was pretty disappointed with this game.

Perhaps to some degree it's more of a YMMV thing mechanically; I generally like most of the mechanics but I agree they can be fiddly at times. I was amused to learn that when I bought my edition of the base game, I happened to get the one with an alternate set of heroes (4th edition in 2015) who replaced the basic hero set in that edition. I'd have remained clueless if I hadn't watched some older basic reviews. :rommie:

I watched a review and I now remember what didn't work for me. It's more of a programming game than a building game, one that was too tight for me to enjoy.

Nevertheless, the game is still around. It clearly has its proponents .

This game has intrigued me for a while, but I never bought it since I don't think anybody else I know would be interested in playing. An app was developed a couple years ago, but the Android version seems to be gone.

Some of the expansions have modified the mechanics as well, though one could argue they still need some potential bugs worked out. One issue with the new Miniboss set is that you can build more than one miniboss to upgrade a room, but the rules also infer that you can't have minibosses in adjacent rooms. This makes it unclear what should happen if the room between two minibosses is removed, and the rooms would normally slide down.
