Indeed, it is hard to rank those two. I mean once you hit the bottom, you just can't get any lower. If one must compare (as seems inevitable) then I would agree with this position, though I would tie VOY and ENT. It just depends on the episode for me if I'm going to watch it.
You're arguing for Most Expensive Trek Series Ever, about which there is no doubt.Definitely best Star Trek ever. Production values, filmed in HD, full use of cgi models. Uniforms most high quality of any series. Set design and construction look like kelvin sets that we’re built for a movie. Budget largest of any Trek show ever made iirc. It looks amazing. The marketing has been good and it’s situated within the most modern form of televised entertainment vis. streaming and Netflix.
And it is not even that the effects are particularly groundbreaking. Space effects in particular are quite poor. There are many current shows with comparable or better effects. TNG on the other hand pretty much blew everything out of the water in its time, its effects were cutting edge then. You're arguing for Most Expensive Trek Series Ever, about which there is no doubt.

Agreed with both of you here. And it is not even that the effects are particularly groundbreaking. Space effects in particular are quite poor. Been a fan of Star Trek since I was a child. Seen everything. Hands down Star trek: Discovery is the best Star Trek television series or movie this franchise has come up with. The story arc is complex (scifi people can handle this. Certainly more complex than a Star Wars plot). Characters are developing nicely. Story is moving at 100mph all the time (especially the last few episodes). Writers of this series should be applauded for what they have come up with.
Does Pike really have to leave Discovery after this season. Isn't there room in the timeline for him to stick around a while?
AgreedI don't think there is a "best Trek" ever. But I must admit how easy it was for me to embrace "Discovery", considering the bad word-of-mouth about it.
Wow. TAS but no TOS?My list would be:
TNG
TAS
DS9
DSC (will see if Season 2 moves up further)
ENT
VOY
Wow. TAS but no TOS?
Bold choice.
I know what you mean here. First time around I didn’t get ds9. Watching it later when I was a little older I fell in love with it and it’s now my favourite group of characters. TNG was my “first” Trek (grew up with it) and it’s still largely my go-to, but I care more about the ds9 characters than I do the TNG guys. And yes I definitely think DS9 found its identity once it got into the Bajoran politics more deeply towards the end of s1 and into s2.Looking back now, DS9 is my favorite series of the Berman era. But I have to admit, I struggled to keep on watching during the show’s first season. For me personally, the show really found its footing with the Circle Trilogy in season 2.
I doubt DSC would ever become my no.1 show, but I tend to agree that it’s the strongest first season production-wise relative to the others (except possibly Enterprise). Story-wise, it’s a different kettle of fish, but DSC certainly looked good out of the gate. It’s trek for the modern era alright. Will Discovery become my Nr. 1? Only time will tell. What I do know is that its first season –the issues with canon, design, etc. notwithstanding- was the best comparing it to S1 of TNG/VOY/DS9/ENT (never saw TOS in first run, so can’t really compare).
Same. I could have done without Pike and Spock if I’m honest (let DSC stand on its own and all that) but my curiosity is piqued for s2 in a way that it really wasn’t for s1. Hopefully we can eventually look back on s1 as “the weak first season”.I’m really excited for S2. Looking forward to explore the mystery of the Red Angel, meeting Captain Pike and of course Spock!
