Captain Marvel (2019)

OK, some new comics spoilers leads to movie speculation...

I think that all of us with reasonable expectations for the movie knew that there was going to have to be significant change to Carol's origin for the MCU. Nor would it be the first time that such changes have been made for MCU-- Wanda and Pietro are no longer mutants or Magneto's children, Hank Pym wasn't involved with Ultron's creation. Drax is no longer the reanimated soul of a real-estate salesman named Arthur Douglas. A universe away, there is Venom without Spider-Man.

Anyway, more often than not it seems, traits or elements from movie versions tend to "leak" over to the comics. Stark being a smart-ass quipster, Quill's love of music, Wanda and Pietro not being mutants or related to Magneto, among others.

Which brings me to today's comic spoilers from "Life of Captain Marvel" #4...

In this issue, it’s revealed that Carol Danvers isn’t a human whose DNA was altered to be part Kree – she’s the child of a Kree mother and a human father.

That’s right – Carol’s mom is really Mari-Ell, a Kree warrior who came to Earth and fell in love. That means that the Psyche-Magnitron – the Kree device that gave Carol her powers – didn’t alter her DNA, it merely activated the latent Kree DNA within her.

It’s also revealed Carol’s Kree name is Car-Ell.

Significant changes to be sure. My personal feelings on the changes to her comics origin notwithstanding (I don't care for it), I do think that such changes would work for her MCU incarnation. Are the comics learning from experience and getting ahead of the game before the movie?

I just saw the trailer in the theater for the first time when I went to see Bad Times at The El Royale (which is an awesome movie with a great, and very, very different performance from Chris Hemsworth), and it is really cool on the big screen.

Well, that's...stupid. Does the comic address why this kree warrior married an explicitly sexist alcoholic who quite possibly also abused Carol (physically, not sexually)? Because earlier Carol books make it clear that her father was a piece of shit, and also had zero respect for women. I guess they could retcon that as being part of the drinking and say that the drinking came later, but Carol's Dad has been portrayed as such a piece of shit that I literally can't buy that an alien would come to Earth and fall in love with him, even if I didn't think that was extremely stupid regardless.

I mean, its a bit more logical then most "alien comes to Earth and falls in love" stories, not all romances end well. but, you'd think that a Kree warrior would have knocked the guy on his ass and taken her kid(s) as soon as he started getting bad, not stayed and enabled his drinking and terrible behavior until he estranged himself from his daughter (who didn't even go to his funeral because she hated him so much, and the scene where Carol and her mother talk about his funeral in a recent book was implying heavily to me that he was abusive, not just a sexist shithead) and died.

If this was used by the MCU, they'd totally remove him being a piece of shit for the backstory of course, but as a comic retcon it really causes problems with things that were definitely canon for carol's backstory in books from even a few months ago.

It's entirely possible the movie version will switch the parents around and have her mom (Annette Benning) be the human and her dad be Jude Law's Kree character.

If by failures, you mean "Not taking the easy way out" like WB and Fox have done for years...

Exactly how the frak did WB take the easy way out with the DECU? Doing that would have been making MOS/BVsS/Wonder Woman/Suicide Squad/Justice League like the MCU Movies just because Marvel was successful with them. People hating on MOS and B vs S because of the excessive booty kicking and seriousness in both should be taking a look at themselves; it was most of them that couldn't stand how Superman Returns was, leading for the film to be considered a failure despite its box- office gross and critical acclaim, leading Warner Bros. to make MOS and BVS to be like they were (and I knew that after Superman Returns 'failed' for not having more fights in it according to most fanboys, this would happen.)

People can't be blaming Warner Bros. for giving them what they wanted.

I liked Superman Returns.

I also liked Man of Steel, though (and more, actually). Excessive booty kicking was not BvS's problem. Excessive stupidity and poor story structure, maybe.

I think that it's interesting that we have not seen any footage of the actress named in your spoiler. I was beginning to wonder what was up with her.

I didn't know she was in it.
It's not really a spoiler, as it was noted earlier in the thread.

Marvel is being their usual hyper-secretive selves about Annette Benning's role, as evidenced by the lack of footage or even an actual character reveal, although it's speculated (and highly likely) that she's playing Carol's mom.

When asked, she admitted that she isn't even actually sure what's she's allowed to say.

Of course, it was originally speculated that Jude Law was playing Mar-Vell, but I'm not so sure that's the case anymore.

It was highly speculated that he was Mar-Vell, but we've noticed that while all the other characters have mostly been named (Ronan, Korath, Minerva) his hasn't...so now we're left wondering if he's Mar-Vell at all or he's someone else. And they aren't telling us because if they revealed his name it would be too much of a spoiler.

Like say...if he were Yon-Rogg...

The speculation was based on his character being described as "Walter Lawson", an alias that Mar-vell briefly used. Yon-Rogg seems much more likely.

To have two characters with similar sounding names would likely be considered potentially confusing to the general public audience, who are unlikely to be familiar with the comicbook storylines. It's an unnecessary complication.

Personally, I'm not convinced that the recent developments in the comics are a reflection of what's going to happen in the movie. For one thing, Marvel Comics and Marvel Studios are to all intents and purposes two very separate entities, with the former being very much the poorer cousin. I very much doubt they're in the loop, creatively speaking and even if they were, letting the comics preempt the movie just wouldn't make any sense.
Plus of course, it's all *far* too similar from what they literally only just did with Star Lord's backstory.

Did anyone else read that as
Carvel?

Yeah, but Star-Lord's Alien Father thing has been an actual part of his character for decades. They just changed it from King J'Son of Spartax to Ego, one alien to another.
