Rascals Was Unique

Be honest, despite it being rather silly & unbelievable at times, it does manage to have appeal & likeability, but more than that, it had the nerve to do something that no other Trek show ever did. It cast other actors, specifically children to play some of the characters, & I'm not talking about some shoehorned in flashback to a character's childhood, (Like Voyager probably did too much of) or even the rare choice to cast an older man to play Jake Sisko, (Which was also a bold choice imho) Although... they did cast that big 80's male model dude to play an older Wesley. Thank god that didn't last long lol

Cast child actors to play adult characters? Who does that? So I have a hard time being overly critical about their performances, because for who they are, it's pretty damn amazing that they'd be able to do it at all.

I can be critical of some of their sillier episodes (I'm looking at you, Fistful of Datas), but this isn't one of them, because they really are out on a limb here

Unique is only good if it's unique in a good way.

The concept of making the characters younger isn't the problem. The problem is the Ferengi takeover thing was extremely poorly done. The same people that set the ship to self destruct rather than risk it being captured in 11001001 surrendered immediately because they got one phaser on one person.

I'm willing to overlook the plot flaws in favor of what I consider a pretty amusing execution in this case. At least Our Heroes remember that they can re-route command functions this time around.

I loved that Ro was the last one to turn herself back into an adult. Her interactions with Guinan were adorable. I guess Ro discovered a part of herself she never wanted to relive again. And this time around it wasn't under Cardassian opression. Also great: the collaboration between young Picard and Alexander and Will Riker. Hilarious. But at least I didn't buy young Picard being Riker's son........;)

I know it's due to Birkin having played Jean Luc's uncle (;)) already, but I really didn't think much of his young Picard. No offense to him, but the other three did much better jobs. (Especially the Ro and Guinan kids.)

The episode is stupid as hell, but I still enjoy it.

The thing that I think totally sells it is the child actors playing their roles with absolute conviction. Birkin completely convinces as a child Picard, but still with an adult mind and authority, and his performance evokes Patrick Stewart admirably, and the other child actors likewise feel note perfect. Maybe only Kid Keiko is the weak link in the chain, but even she isn't too bad, and Keiko was the least defined of the four adult characters at that point anyway.

Wow, to think I never noticed that! You make a good point!

I still think the most interesting thing is the O'Brien/Keiko situation. It's something you can only see in sci-fi and it is uncomfortable but uncomfortable in a good way in that you feel you could gets tons of drama from it. Not to mention a perfect premise to explore what exactly love means when faced with a situation beyond normal human convention. Which also makes me wish years later they had allowed to keep Molly as a grown teenager after falling in the time travel vortex or even doing the first pitch of that story on TNG where it use to be Alexander that had got all aged up.

You know what? When I first watched that episode, I first thought that they might keep her as a grown up and thence she would evolve through the rest of the series, so I was greatly disappointed when they basically hit the reset button at the end.
I think they missed an opportunity there.

It was a fun episode that was possible in a 24 episode season. I don't think you'd get this type of episode with a 10, 13 or 15 count season.

I always liked this one...but then again, I'm the guy who actually likes TFF, NEM, S3 of TOS, etc...

One of those guilty pleasure episodes of mine. I think the kid actors absolutely nail the roles they are going for, especially with the uncomfortable interplay between Miles and Keiko and Picard attempting to assert his authority with Troi explaining the logistical issues.

The Ferengi is definitely the weakest part of the episode for sure but worth it to see Riker bluff his way with technobabble.

I'd really like to know more about the behind-the-scenes aspects of this one in terms of what kind of prep the kids did with the adults.

At least the kid playing Picard had played his nephew previously, so he had experience with Patrick Stewart's acting.

I wonder why he didn't reprise the role in Generations.
