Looks like we will have a fully bearded Lieutenant Spock on Discovery

^^^
Looks more like a Beatnik (sans the black Beret cap and sunglasses of course).
This is Spock as a Beatnik.

So I'm watching the NYCC panel that debuted the trailer, the very first thing Kurtzman said after it ended, "Why does Spock have a beard?!"

I laughed.

Then he said "It will be explained."

I'm pretty sure he has it because he was out and about investigating these angels, maybe he was captured, or something happened where he didn't have access to grooming supplies.

While I really like the Spock: Wilderness Years look, I'm not sold on the voice yet. Nimoy's was one of a kind. Quinto's was softer, different, but unique. Peck sounded quite generic in the (admittedly only) 2 lines of dialogue we have heard.

Of course we got to wonder what else to expect from hipster Spock. Will he like to vape using spores from the spore drive instead of tobacco? Will we find out he traded in his valuable harp for a guitar.

Oh...that's where the Spores went. It's all coming together now.

Hopefully mirror Georgiou found a way back home and brought Vulcan traitor bearded Spock over to help recruit/corrupt Burham.

Maybe they'll CGI the beard out like they did for Henry Cavill's mustache.

This is all very interesting, but I'd like to discuss Spock's beard a little bit. I think it's a meaningful topic that needs to be addressed. Thoughts?
I've seen better beards. I mean, it's alright, probably about a 7 or 8 out of 10. But, the chin is not as full as it could be.

Hopefully they update the make up better for Season 3.

I put it through some algorithms I've developed, and I had it scaled as a 6.327 on a scale of 1 to 11.756.

Yes, if the producers are listening (which I would suspect they are, BTW, because they clearly listened to we the fans about Klingon hair)...they really should update the beard for S3. As a fan I deserve better, and I deserve to understand the following as well:

1. What transpired to lead up to the development of the beard in its current state?
2. What is the Vulcan cultural reaction to citizens growing a beard? A goatee? Lamb chops?
4. How does Sarek feel about the beard...too much of a reminder of Sybok?
5. What techniques do Vulcans typically use to trim or modify a beard...or to completely shave?
6. What were Spock's thoughts and reactions to having a beard?
7. How do we reconcile, within the sacred Star Trek canon, that we have never seen Spock with a full beard? And how unacceptable is it that at no point were we, the fans, ever informed that Spock had a beard?

If the producers can't come up with these answers, then I have no choice but to consider DSC an abomination that is not linked to the primary continuity (well...that and the darker lighting on the bridge...duh!). It further cements the idea that DSC is not only not in the prime timeline, but it basically isn't Star Trek. It's really not ANYTHING (not even a tv show) if it can't reconcile these basic questions that everyone wants and deserves to know.

I really hope that Spock shaves between his first and second scene and will then be beardless for the rest of the show. Rereading this thread (and others) will be hilarious after that happened :D

These are all very important questions. I think it would be an affront to all Star Trek knowledge, past, present and future, for these questions to not be addressed. More over, it clearly insults the legacy of Leonard Nimoy, Gene Roddenberry and Mark Lenard who crafted the iconic Vulcans as we know them now.

As a fan, I am appalled and dismayed by the careless disregard for Vulcans as they have been presented in the past. Clearly the production team does not understand Vulcans, or anything at all really, including how beards work. Beards do not spring out of nowhere. They must have a source!!

Preach it, my brother.

Well the actor still has the same beard.

I have a feeling this spock Spock only shows up midway to late in the Season. Him in the trailer was just for hype.

What I hope is, they do a Pike era Enterprise series for the 3rd or 4th series and Spock will obviously be clean shaven there.

I don't think they need to keep shoehorning TOS character into Discovery.

We've got Pike, Number One and Spock. They just have to decide which doctor, engineer and other notable crew members are there 8-9 years before Kirk.
