Discoprise won't have TOS "cardboard sets"

"Low budget" is another thing thrown around regarding TOS, when actually, compared to other shows in the 60s, it was pretty high budget (one of the reasons it was cancelled was because of how expensive it was to make). Classic Doctor Who in the 70s wished it looked as good as Star Trek in the 60s.
This. They just seem very generic.
Ill informed, perhaps. Still, you'd think someone in the profession would know better.
They are cheap compared to modern sets and don’t come close to holding up as believable. I love the old sets and designs, but they’re a product of their time and should be viewed as such.
So, I was responding to Tuskin38’s comment that the term was not meant to be negative when it most certainly was.
Yup. All that needed to be said is Discovery wants to bring the Enterprise in-line, visually, with how everything else looks in the series. No more, no less.
We really don't know what they would look like with modern production values and several million dollars for construction.
They'd look like DISCO's sets.
I know. I'm just saying how it's popular opinion to think that TOS was low budget, even for the 1960s, when it was actually a high budget production.

Yes he was. I couldn't find the post I was thinking of showing his designs for the In a Mirror Darkly sets, but here's one showing his work on the NX class bridge.
You could see what a set from a 1960s production would look like with millions of dollars available. It was called 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. That set is so amazing it could easily hold up to today’s film standards with only the slightest tweaks, like replacing rear projection monitors for actual computer monitors. I think the best the Trek sets ever looked was on “The Cage” where they had extra money to play up graphics on the monitors above the consoles. They really overdid themselves in the context of television production. Sadly because of cost cutting, those monitors typically just had static images of space for the regular episodes.
