Aesthetic decisions aside, I don't think it's fair to say TOS had cardboard sets when that isn't even true for the most part.
Don't forget the papier mache rocks!

Yeah, they really upgraded it nicely in TWOK. They were able to achieve better and more dramatic lighting as a result of replacing rear projection monitors with CRTs.I think my favourite Enterprise bridges are in the TOS movies. Except TMP.
All the variants and redresses of that set are nice.

No they're not. Calm down. The visual designers on this show are full of shit - arrogant, self-congratulatory and dismissive of things that they apparently know little about to begin with.
In some areas, yes but it did look very dark in others. Especially on the bridgeThe lights were on in Season 1 as well.

People apparently have terrible memories.
If that's the case, consider DSC's Enterprise design as the real thing the "stage play" sets in TOS were based on.I watch TOS like I watch a stage play. It's a stylized depiction. Nobody expects all the visuals of a stage play to be ultra-realistic. It's merely a backdrop for the setting. The story and characters are the important part.
What an overreaction to nothing. Relax, it's just a show. The visual designers on this show are full of shit - arrogant, self-congratulatory and dismissive of things that they apparently know little about to begin with.
Bet being completely ignored at the Emmys in the production design category - and most others - was a shock to them.
Come off it. The sets in DSC are incredible. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't deserve eyes.Given how they worked so hard to create these sets only to have a loud group of fans crap on them, I don’t blame them for feeling a bit peeved so they respond by being a bit catty over the old TOS sets. It’s the vindictive Orci method. I wish less people would gravitate to that.
Not really. It's just lit up like a store but the details are clearly lit. What shadows are produced are there to enhance the look of the set in an attempt to make it look more like a film. They did the same thing with a similar effect with the 1701-D bridge in Generations. It's just unfortunate that certain details fade into shadow because it wasn't designed for that kind of lighting. The sharper angles of the DISCO bridge allows the details to pop out better. I'm going through Google Image Search and I can't find a single picture that could be described as dark, every detail is clear and I'm able to see the characters. Maybe it's a problem with your picture settings. In some areas, yes but it did look very dark in others. Especially on the bridge
I don't believe anyone is suggesting anything less than an update of the original with more details and better tech. That said, I don't think the TOS style computer interface looked too out of place on the Xhosa or Amargosa station. I think even that could be made into something that fits DSC.If you took the same shape and layout, added some details and changed the displays and interfaces, it could work. But just straight up copying it would look silly compared to the DISCO bridge since they're supposed to modern ships.
I didn't notice until the scene where Data is speaking to Geordi in sickbay, and I was like "Data's uniform is made from the off-cuts of Geordi's!"Those DS9 uniforms never looked right on the TNG crews. Glad they switched them.
So original Star Trek fans get to throw poo at Discovery and its crew for months but as soon as someone from Discovery calls the TOS sets cardboard it's "OMG, disrespecting a fictional tv series, how dare they?!" time. That's a bit hypocritical, isn't it?The visual designers on this show are full of shit - arrogant, self-congratulatory and dismissive of things that they apparently know little about to begin with.

And I don't agree with the argument that they should respect TOS because without it they wouldn't have a job today, while technically true at some point people can and should stop caring about that. I certainly don't respect the architect's work who designed the ugly ass hospital I work at in the late 60s. "But you wouldn't have your workplace without him!". So what, that doesn't make it look good, it's godawful ugly and no one in their right mind would build a hospital like that today (there are in fact plans to build a new one and demolish the original).
Roddenberry himself had them redesign the shit out of everything for TMP with a flimsy on screen explanation of "eighteen month refit" and that wasn't done with any care for the original look or an attempt to resemble TOS, one look at the Phase 2 screen tests shows that they were planning to do something much closer to TOS until they got a feature film budget and apparently declared "Woohoo, we have money to spend, goodbye sixties aesthetics!"

But that's not a bad thing, if they have money to make something look nicer they should do it. If NBC had handed the TOS guys a truck full of money for new sets and props to rival 2001 for a 4th season they would have taken sledgehammers to the sets immediately, it's not about respecting a look, it's about the money you have and what you can do with it.Which should tell you the problems weren't with the designs, but with getting a bunch of money dropped in their laps. Pretty much the same problem Discovery has. They have a bunch of money, and dammit, they are going to spend it.
Of course, it's not exactly a controversial opinion, it's an ugly building. And the TOS look is outdated and not suitable for a modern representation of the future, sticking close to it would inevitably lead to a retro future look and that's the opposite of what the designers back then intended.Do you go around to professional functions and openly criticize it for no real reason?
