Contest: ENTER September 2018 Art Challenge - "That... is a Starship."

"My God..." he whispered. "What is that?"
"That," April breathed, "is a starship."
Perhaps it was the way he said it. With all the awe and respect a human being could utter. Staaarship.
George Kirk and Robert April from Diane Carey's Star Trek: Final Frontier

You know what we haven't had in a while? Starships.
For September's Art Challenge, I thought we could return to what every Trek fan loves doing: drawing/designing starships. These majestic interstellar beauties should be magnificent, graceful, powerful, and instill a sense of awe and wonder. I'd like you to come up with your own unique design, be it a drawing, model (physical or a collection of photons in your computer), painting etc. Or, produce an image of an existing class, or model you've already made, but shown from an unusual, but flattering angle, or set in surroundings or lighting that really show it off.
Think of the Enterprise leaving spacedock in The Motion Picture; the launch of the Enterprise-B in Generations; the first appearance of the Vulcan ship Ti'Mur in Ent: "Breaking the Ice"; or the Galaxy bearing down on the Cardassian weapon platforms in DS9: "Tears of the Prophets".

The closing date for submitting your entries (in this thread) is by the end of Sunday 30th September. Monthly Art Challenge Guidelines, Rules & Requirements can be found here.
Good luck and happy starship doodling!

Now, this is a challenge I really want to find time for!

I hope to make the Phoenix in my signature a "reality"! :)

The Lollipop lives!

Sounds...fascinating.
- I'm glad you think so. I'm hoping this theme might draw in some more of the wonderful artists on this board (like yourself) who excel at starship art. Your Lollipop is pretty cool - your use of unconventional shapes and silhouettes (in all your Paint art) really are striking and adventurous. Will you have time to work on a larger, more detailed version?

Now, this is a challenge I really want to find time for!
- I hope you can, Scribble. I'd love to see what you can come up with. No pressure, though :)

You've seen my sketches. I do have a physical kitbash of that design from an old AMT Enterprise model, but it's currently in pieces and does not include the sensor bar or hangar bays.

Famous last words: It shouldn't take too long...if I can find the time at all.

I love this challenge idea, though!

I love this competition, and I want to see some stuff! (damnit!) lol
Good luck to everyone!

And I shall submit this:

Some notes:

-First, in the interest of time and expediency I decided to steal a page from Laura's book and draw this in Paint. Obviously, I expected some difficulty as I have never drawn anything completely on a computer in my life, but I was mostly not prepared for the aggravation involved. Laura, you are a saint.

-Secondly, taking every opportunity to plug my fanfic, this is a depiction of the modified Enterprise in my trek reboot series, known to long-timers in the fanfic forum as "Star Trek: MY Way." Long timers here will note that I've posted a version of this ship before. For this contest I've made a few adjustments.

And I await your commentary.

Well, I wouldn't go that far. Mine uses mostly preset shapes (circle, square, rounded rectangle, triangles, etc). I like how yours looks like a sketch. I haven't been able to do freeform drawings on it (okay, except for to show Riker's got hair on his head and not a football helmet) Most of my ships are drawn in about an hour or less.

It is a sketch, actually. I tried using preset shapes and got all kinds of nowhere trying to angle and resize them, and I finally just decided, "Screw it, I'll just draw the dang thing." This decision actually led to a whole bunch of new aggravations, because at the time I made it I didn't own an electronic pen and the el cheapo one I got is too wide for me to smoothly sketch with. (I tried using my finger at one point. That would have made for a hilarious YouTube video.) Also, I couldn't figure out how make the canvas go fullscreen, so I was stuck trying to draw on a little rectangle in the Paint window and only able to make it bigger and smaller using that slide at the top, which ended up obscuring parts of the drawing if I didn't zoom it just right.

And yeah, I know, "It's a poor artist who blames his tools," but I am a poor artist in many respects, and my tools sucked.
