Episode IX Speculation and Discussion

I really, really hope they don't go back on any of the stuff they revealed on TLJ. Nothing drives me more crazy then when we get a big reveal, and then just retcon it away a short time later.
What was revealed in TLJ?

I know a lot of pissed people wanted that to be the case, but I didn't see anything in the scene to indicate it actually was.

Well maybe they do the same as like Obi Wan telling Luke that his father was dead in ANH. So from a certain point of view, Rey's parents are no body's :)

Maybe they’ll turn out to be really lost Tusken Raiders, and try to eat everyone’s brains.

This is fun. Someone else have a go.

The lack of thought into this trilogy is truly staggering. You would think they would have it thought out at the start.

JJ Abrams apparently had it all outlined, but Rian Johnson chose to take it in a different direction. We won't know for a while exactly how much that (along with Carrie Fisher's death) alters the plan.

It may be inaccurate, but Daisy Ridley said it.

She doesn't say that there were draft outlines written by JJ; she says that she thinks there were draft outlines that Rian veered away from... which doesn't match anything we've been told.I

We do know, though, that both Abrams and Rian reached the same conclusion regarding Rey's parentage independently of one another.

Fair point. Despite how it was reported, her use of the words "I think" casts doubt on her statement and I've found nothing that really backs it up.

JJ Abrams is not going to retcon or re-address something - Rey's parentage - that was already explained, particularly when, as has been noted, said explanation is, by his own admission, the same one that he would have offered had he been in charge.

After Rey’s Forceback experience in TFAs, Maz says to Rey words to the effect of ‘you already know the answer to that question’, regarding her parentage - and by implication, the Forceback seems to point to Rey being abandoned by parents when she was young.

Having said that, also part of the Forceback, Rey also experiences Kylo and associated acolytes killing Jedi [students] as well as Bespin, and hearing the Vader / Luke duel at cloud city - so that maybe a different answer to a different question (around Luke’s lightsaber itself, in relation to its ownership and journey)... or maybe not!

So many questions! :P

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only "evidence" we have in regards to Rey's parents being nobodies is Kylo Ren's say-so, amirite? So why trust anything he says?

Because Rey said so too.

And because there's no room for any kind of grand reveal here anyway. Making her a Skywalker or a (insert name here) wouldn't bring anything valuable to the story, anyway, whereas making her a nobody does bring added value.
