Poll Do you consider Discovery to truly be in the Prime Timeline at this point?

Bleh. I deleted the post I put up. Reiterating what I said so people know what BillJ was quoting:

Whenever I try to picture Discovery as a TOS-looking show, I just can't. I think to myself, "Thank God they didn't go with that." Whenever I try to imagine what DSC would've been like if were of another era, I keep thinking back to the '70s. I look at the concept art, I look at the show which reminds me of the movies, and I keep thinking this feels more like it would be a '70s or TMP-era show. Even the nickname for it is Disco!

It's just not a "60s" show and imagining it as such, even though some might prefer it, just feels wrong to me. It's not Discovery.

I think that was the gist of it...

This is where my hangup is at. I don't expect a view of the future now to in any way match the view of the future from fifty years ago. That goes for the look, the technology, the way people act, and see the world and the universe.

You can match up names and dates, but you can never match that feel. Which is why I treat Discovery as its own timeline.

YMMV.

I guess we can call Discovery the Happy Days of Star Trek. Or, to quote one of my friends when watching Happy Days, "I love the '70s version of the '50s!"

Or in my case, "I love the 2010s version of the 2250s!"

Well that's because he's the only Superman/Clark actor to actually 'act' onscreen. Superman is supposed to be a charismatic character but we've had wooden, emo performances post-Reeve, that audiences haven't resonated with.

This is why I don't buy that Superman is a character that doesn't translate well to modern film. It's because they haven't allowed for a compelling performer to make it work, the same way Reeve made it work in the 70s.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, if they set Discovery in 2275 (perhaps after TMP), fans would have been far more accepting of it aesthetically.

You could do a modern TV series with the TMP aesthetics but improve the 70s uniforms. Perhaps even keep the Disco ones.

It's also a time period in Trek history we don't know much about, Wrath of Khan is still 10 years away. You could do so much without screwing up continuity.

Kirk, Spock and friends are all still out there, but the show doesn't have to worry about being a prequel to TOS now, and the Ralph Mcquarrie designs are tailor-made for this time period.

The question wether "The Cage" is TOS is rather interesting and obviously depends on how you define The Original Series. On the one hand it is the original, but it also wasn't broadcasted as part of The Original Series. But it also has the same logo as TOS has, just "Star Trek". So, personally I count it as TOS, mostly for convenience.
