Definite New Series/Limited Series with Patrick Stewart Returning

I'm suggesting de Lancie could still reprise the role. Him looking older will just be another appearance he adopted, much like his apparent receding hairline throughout the years. And nobody will care, because it's not only de Lancie but that he's paired with Stewart, which amounted to among of the best chemistry between casts in all Trek.

I don't see anything wrong with focusing discussion of the show in this existing thread. If the OP wants to rename it to reflect the show's current status, I'd be happy to do so, but I don't think we're in "Wolverine director search down to 8" territory yet.

Yep. Delancie's age is a non-issue. He could easily make an off-handed remark that he's being considerate of Picard's "twilight years" and didn't want him to feel decrepit in his omnipotent, timeless presence.

Commenter Ben Grimm over at BirthMoviesDeath has an interesting theory about what this show could be:

"My guess: Ambassador Picard dealing with the fallout of the explosion of Romulus. Single story, non-episodic, leads to the Romulans joining the Federation (or at least becoming allies) and a hopeful, peaceful future."

No. If it takes place 20 years after the destruction of Romulus, the fallout will have long since been done with. It's fanwank that no one outside of uber-Trekkies care about anyway.

It's almost certainly going to be a personal story focused on Picard. The question is what could it be? PIcard had no significant other that lasted. His brother and nephew are dead. Presumably he's remained friends with some of the Enterprise crew, but I bet dollars to donuts that even if there are a few cameos we won't get a TNG reprise.

Honestly, bringing back John De Lancie as Q would be the best TNG character by far to include. I mean, I would not want to see a long-form redo of Tapestry, but I could see Picard at the sunset of his career (not life, 80 is just comfortably middle aged) looking back over his decisions. Then have Q appear and basically be the devil, tempting him with different scenarios, altering either his personal life or to redo some of his professional mistakes. A younger Picard wouldn't take Q up on this, but an older Picard, full of regrets? He might try to get things "right."

As an aside, wouldn't Picard be well into full-blown Irumodic Syndrome by now?

@Dayton Ward posted something interesting about how this will effect the Litverse continuity in another thread.

All I can probably say at this point without getting into trouble is that this wasn't a surprise.

Between Dayton's comment, @Kirsten Beyer 's spearheading of the Picard project and the Litverse coming back unimpeded in 2019 (This would have been the perfect time for them to reboot the novels like Disney did with their Star Wars tie-ins, and yet...) has me thinking that, rather surprisingly, this may not be an issue for the Litverse continuing forward.

Maybe this is why the new novel contract took so damn long. CBS, Paramount (?) and Simon & Schuster wanted to make sure all their ducks were in a row before the announcements of the past two days (the future of the novels and the development of the Picard series) were all made public.

Given how much liberties they've taken with the 23rd century aesthetic in DISCOVERY, I'm curious to see how the universe looks on the eve of the 25th century. Will they bring back the Okudas? I kinda hope they go for something new, instead of retreading the look of past TNG era (2364-2379). Go different, much like how THE MOTION PICTURE departed from TOS asthetics.

Looking forward to watching fan heads explode when everything ends up looking nothing like either the NEM/VOY era or STO...

It's supposed to be untreatable. But Beverly identified a brain defect in a scan in the "present" portion of All Good Things... which could have led to Irumodic syndrome. Maybe he got that brain defect taken care of.

2019 seems pretty ambitious. I don't think you can launch a sci-fi series - even a short run one - in less than 16 months these days.

2020 is way more likely.

I had a feeling it was going to happen and I'm so delighted. Is it a short term series or a proper seasons long one?

If the 24th/25th century was ever to be reintroduced into Star Trek then the best bet is placing the most well known actor/character from that era at the centre of it.
