MLB World Series 2018: Eh. Dodgers/Boston. Eh.

He was one strike away from getting that no-hitter, too.

But I'm sorry to read he also had awful comments like Hader.

In today's "pitcher wins are a completely bullshit statistic, kids" lesson: Jacob deGrom's record on the season: 5-6, 1.82 ERA, 209 ERA+.

Several sources are reporting that Bryce Harper is on the trading block. Maybe I’m in the minority, but I don’t think Harper’s as good as people would have us believe. He’s definitely talented, but talent doesn’t always translate into results. If I’m a contender, I pass on Harper.

Here’s an article about Newcomb’s tweets.

Edit: Trea Turner, too.

Both happened in their late-teens. I tend to mostly give those a pass, provided they take part in some sensitivity training.

I think he is immensely talented. I'm just not sure how good of a presence he is in the clubhouse? A shame the Nationals fired Dusty Baker, he seemed to have the team working well together.

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed in the Astros for trading for Osuna, even if I'm not a fan (just a bandwagon one during the World Series).

Damn! The Pirates got Archer from the Rays. I was holding out hope the Cubs could get him back.

Also, Kevin Gausman & Darren O'Day go from the Orioles to the Braves.

The price tag on Archer was likely far too high for the Cubs to reasonably pay without parting with position players on the 25-man roster.

I have no idea what the hell they were thinking with getting Kintzler, though; the main problem with Cubs pitching has been getting out of the first inning without being shelled and Smyly should be coming off the DL and going straight to the pen any day now (and Edwards and Morrow should be back relatively soon).

Like, Hendricks for example:

1st inning: 8.59 ERA, 10 HR in 22.0 IP
After that: 3.00 ERA, 9 HR in 105.0 IP

The Mets should forfeit all of their remaining games.

Nothing will ever, ever change for them until new ownership is installed.

According to one beat writer, a GM told him that he didn't even know who with the Mets he should be negotiating with, that's how dysfunctional they are.

Isn't Archer under team control for a few more years? If any pitcher is worth going for, it'd be him. Now he's with a division rival who seemed like they would be in a rebuilding year when they parted with McCutchen and Cole.

It would be nice if Smyly could come back any kind of good. Darvish too. Edwards bas been back, unless he had new problems. He just pitched on the 29th, maybe since then.

They need to bring Maddux in to work with Hendricks. If his problem isn't physical, someone needs to get him straightened out.

Well, I'm pretty satisfied with who the Yankees picked up (and gave away) before the trade deadline.

Happ, Britton and tapped out on the international signing bonus pool money.

I'm also pretty happy that the Pirates got aggressive and grabbed Archer.

A St. Louis white flag? Or making room for the other OF's?

The Cardinals trade Tommy Pham to the Rays for 3 young minor leaguers.
White flag. Maybe if Pham was three years younger, this trade wouldn't make sense. But at 30 with so many other younger outfielders in the franchise, this makes some sense. They even traded outfield prospect Mercado to Cleveland for two other young outfield prospects.

A playoff move would've been the wrong thing to do. This team doesn't just need tweaking, it needs major re-working for next year and beyond. These are the Bizarro World Cardinals. Last in fielding. Generally poor play (so many brain cramps everywhere). Clubhouse chemistry problems. No set lineup. Barely competent managing and coaching. Prospects that are well-regarded, but still not quite there. Leadership and true stars that are aging (32 year-old Carpenter and 36 year-old Molina). Of the two big gets in recent years, Fowler is all of a sudden 70 years old, and Ozuna needs to spend a lot of high quality time with a real hitting coach (which Mabry and Mueller weren't) to find out if last year was real or an outlier.

I think this all happened because the organization became complacent in their "Cardinal Way." They also waited way too long to fire Matheny. So, the target moves to Mozeliak's back, now. Frankly, I wish they'd bring someone in from the outside to give them a blunt assessment of what's gone wrong and shake things up as needed (where's a young Whitey Herzog when you need him?).

Things are still salvageable. But they are at a tipping point. Just a couple more wrong moves or a bad hire, and the franchise could be in the wilderness for quite a while. When you have the fifth highest average ticket prices in the league and still have averaged over 40,000 a year in attendance for all but five years since 2000 (and was below 40,000 just once since 2005 -- and that was 38,000), it's because you made the playoffs twelve times with four pennants and two World Series championships. Fans will pay for performance. There's no way those attendance figures are sustained if the club has to do a complete rebuild. There's also no way they'll be sustained if the same mediocre product we've seen lately keeps taking the field.

With Girardi rumored to want, and be wanted for, the St. Louis job, we might find out if he's really any good without the Steinbrenner $$$$.

^He did a good job in Florida (for one season) before being fired because he clashed with management. Mozeliak is an asshole, but he’ll be the one who takes the blame if the Cardinals don’t win.

Girardi is certainly the best of the already available managerial candidates.

Buck Showalter's contract runs out with the Orioles at the end of the year, and it's very unlikely they'll keep him. (And I'm not sure why he'd even want to say, the Orioles are a train wreck.) He's near the top of most best current managers lists. At 62, that's only three years older than Francona.

If you don't already know, the Cardinals could've hired Terry Francona (he'd have accepted the offer), but passed over him for Matheny in 2012. :scream: Francona is in the last year of his contract with the Indians, but they have two one-year options they can invoke. So, it's unlikely the Cardinals could get him this time even if they wanted to.

In house, the Cards are playing Shildt out of a chance to get the job permanently. Oquendo has never managed in the big leagues and for perspective, he is two years older than Girardi and only four years younger than Francona. Stubby Clapp, the AAA Memphis manager has been mentioned as a possible. Mark McGwire is a dark horse.
