We've always lived like this. People trying to bring down people is as old as civilization.
Gunn/Barr/Fill-in-the-blank can apologize and become upright citizens, but that doesn't change the pain they may have others by their words and actions. It doesn't change the fact an employer has to weigh whether or not the actions could detrimentally affect their business.
Of course people have always tried to bring people down but the internet has perfected it to a new level. Especially since the idea of what the internet is today is different from how it use to be seen. It use to be a place of freedom without any rules. Now it is a way of life for so people they think it is as important as the outside world. Not to mention the whole aspect of being able to hide who you are or people who want to use to become a internet star have help make the place more toxic, overtime. It was a bad idea for people to start getting their news from the internet. We kind of messed up with social media and it's kind of destroying civility which allows vandals like Trump to move in and get power.
