Visually Discoprise in the game sucks, Klingons suck as usual. But the beams are pretty awesome :)

Another thumbs up here for SG-1's Ori beams.

Here's a clip illustrating the inherent awesomeness and superiority of beams. Like a hot knife thru butter...

Yes, I'm going to bring back the ad hominem "JJ was influenced by Star Wars" argument. Because he had the idea that phasers should be little "pew-pews" instead of beams. Which makes me think back to the climax of ST09 when it took hundreds of dotty phasers from the Enterprise to blow bits off the Narada when beams would've sliced through it like, as pointed out above, a hot knife through butter. But apparently that's not exciting enough for today's audience.

That happens sometimes in DS9 as well. It isn't consistent though, some times the beams just vanish instantly, sometimes they 'pulse'.

What's relatively bold is that neither the Kelvin nor the Enterprise actually fired upon Nero's ship in earnest. They just poured out defensive fire against Nero's missiles, with increasing success (ultimately completely negating that threat). A few stray shots may have accidentally hit the giant mining rig in the Kelvin fight, too, but George Kirk had other priorities at the time.

When Kirk finishes off the already collapsing Narada, he does so with a combination of torps and those short red beams. But there's no "cutting up" required - the adversary is already done, and this is just kicking his coffin and rattling the hearse. Mighty slicing would appear wasted here, both pragmatically and dramatically speaking.

Personally, I like all types of energy weapons.

From Beams, Bolts, Streams of short pulses, long Beam Rifle like streaks from Gundam, large voluminous Wave Guns.

I want all of them in my Star Trek Head Canon.

There will be no shortage on variety of energy weapon types and emissions.
