Oh, I see. You seem to have confused reaction with action and backlash with hate speech. Expressing the opinion that they don't like the trailer would be a reaction. Saying racist and sexist things would not be a reaction; hate speech is a free choice.

When you said you were not surprised by the audience's reaction, in flooding Diop's Instagram account with racist and sexist posts, what you seem to have meant was you were not surprised by the level of entitlement that racist, sexist trolls feel to spew hatred.

I agree, their vileness seems to know no bounds. We really shouldn't be surprised when they chime in on any day ending in y.

When you said the reaction didn't surprise you (or that it was expected), it was unclear whether you meant you were not surprised that Diop disabled comments. What Diop did was a reaction.

    LOL. No.

I'm not surprised that she's going the 'Star Wars' route to blame those who dislike her and the trailer as 'racist' and 'sexist'.

She did this earlier as well, and also claimed that the BTS photos weren't an accurate representation of how the show would look... and then the trailer proved she was lying.

So yes, the reaction from audiences was expected here. I'm not surprised she's the supposed 'victim' of trolling. It happens when the majority are giving your trailer dislikes and disliking your casting and look.

What happened didn't surprise me in the slightest.

Also the backlash made DC delete the Titans trailer from their YT page.

It's in the @badpostitans feed that shutting down the comments was a reaction to racists attacks. I think that has more credibility than your unsupported claim that Diop is misrepresenting what happened. :techman:

[NEWS] Anna Diop (Starfire) has disabled her instagram comments due to disgusting racist attacks since yesterday’s #Titans trailer. Racism is never okay and has no place in the DC family.

I couldn't put together a more standard "TV hooker" attire if I was given a dump truck full of cash and 10 years to do it. I mean, at this point its fairly low even on the list of things wrong with starfire specifically (no orange skin, shoots fire, burns people alive, wig also looks like shit, effects look like shit, among other things that are as much of a problem if not moreso), much less the list of problems the show has in general, but to pretend like those are normal clothes and look nothing like how TV/movies portray sex workers is ridiculous.

None of that has anything to do with the actress though, and the people harassing her are shitheads. She's just taking a paycheck, she doesn't control the quality of the show and that kind of stuff isn't ok regardless.

    LOL!

No it isn't. That's just a silly fanpage, made by someone trying desperately hard to defend the show:

    https://twitter.com/badpostitans

Even more sketchy than the "Star Wars Facts" account that starting the Tran cyberbullying rumor.

You still haven't supported your claim that Diop lied. How are you more credible than that page?

By the way, if anyone has a better and more reliable source than the one I posted that discusses the reason why Diop shut down comments on Instagram, please post it. So far, @dodge is the only other person to post the claim but did so without citation.

Look, I'm not going to disagree that the character design is awful (nothing to do with the actress' race.) The wig, the costume, the effects it just looks completely shitty; it's interesting to me how certain clothing can be called "hooker costume" when worn by a female. A woman in a short, tight, dress and and furry coat? Hooker!

That's a pretty disgusting and sexist attitude to have.

Does the costuming and effects in the show look horrible? Oh, absolutely and I've no idea what the thinking going on behind this show is, but "hooker costume," please.

I heard about it on the tweety machine, saw the comments were disabled on her insta page and judging by some of the comments elsewhere on the interwebs I have no reason to think that account of events isn't accurate.

“Fans” can be terrible people. Actors aren’t responsible for most of the decisions in a production. She didn’t choose her clothes. She didn’t direct the work. She didn’t edited it, etc.

Why “fans” feel the need to beat up an actor publicly is beyond me. Fandom has some serious issues. Maybe, like, just don’t watch? Maybe realize there’s something more important than your favorite character not being represented how you think they should be.

Right. There isn't any reason to think it's inaccurate. None.

By the way, calling what happened to Kelly Marie Tran only a rumor that got started by a sketchy account, that's cute. If your intents were to cast fear, uncertainty, and doubt and to gaslight, then I gotta say: "Oops. You really blew it." If you wanted to actually post an admission that you find the allegations of cyberbullying against both Diop and Tran to be credible, you couldn't have picked anything much clearer than that, short of coming out and explicitly saying it.

Its not sexist, its an observation that the only people you see dressing like that in TV shows or movies are hookers. The fur coat combo with a weird tight dress and tall boots is exactly what a stereotypical hooker would wear in a TV show or movie. A bit cleaner I suppose, but you have to at least see the similarities if you've ever seen characters like that on TV/in movies. I'm sure that's not what they meant to imply, but if this was any other show you wouldn't be arguing about it being a prostitute get up. Accurate or not, its what another TV show or movie would use for a prostitute character.

Just because its not the shows intention doesn't mean its not what it looks like. There is no reason to yell at me, I didn't dress a woman like she's a victim of the week on CSI and then try to pretend she's Starfire. The people who think edgy shit like "Fuck batman" and vicious Dove are good ideas did that shit, I'm just saying what it very obviously looks like.

I have to agree with Trek55555.

I understand your argument...but it's like when Christopher argues with all his might that what traditional Superman wears are NOT red underwear, but trunks.

Sorry, but the general population will still call it underwear. And the same thing with how many will describe this costume (which again, we ALL agree is not a good version).

Don't believe me? Post a full photo of this version of Starfire, and ask people to describe it in up to 4 words without looking at the comments first.

Also, I DO want to mention that while there ARE racist comments in the criticism, as you have stated, MANY MORE are perfectly fine with an African American actress...they just want her to have a "real" costume and to LOOK like Starfire...some of the photoshops out there are WAAAAAY better, and acceptable to most.

Personally I think a woman of African or Carribean descent would be perfect, especially if she was over 5' 8', and had some kind of accent.

I have to admit that was what I thought when I first saw that Starfire/costume.

Interesting and yes, that is a type of typical hooker gear that's appeared in movies and TV at least as early as the 1970s. Still, I feel that will be the least of this series' issues going forward.

    True.

I should imagine it would be obvious that yelling at a woman that she looks like a hooker no matter how she's dressed is a no no. Evidently not...

As for "there's nothing racist going on, it's just "regular" criticism"...

    http://www.syfy.com/syfywire/titans...stagram-comments-as-racist-reactions-continue

Anyway, here's some totally not racist comments that are totally being made up (except you can look them up in the one post that still has comments enabled)...

    Nope, nothing racist there...
(and that's just a small sample)

Saying that you feel the look of Starfire is off compared to the comics and you dislike that, fine. No issues with that.
But yeah, those comments are simply sexist and racist. No two ways around it.

For me, personally, this shit got weird when Robin starts killing people and says 'Fuck Batman'. That just screams to me that these creators are simply trying to make another grittier version of something. Not interested in this at all right now.
