The cybernetic-doodads-oozing-from-every-orifice thing is probably especially appropriate for the DSC setting. We saw bandages fairly seldom in TOS or TNG, and if a character wore those, they usually went away by the next episode, the VISOR and Picard's heart notwithstanding. But DSC involves a year-long war and has already explicated at least two cases of "cybernetics" (Detmer's eyepiece and a man in a wheelchair in the "Magic" party) as the telltales of war wounded.

Then again, cybernetics also have the excuse for being the old thing slowly going out of favor: Georgiou had a gunner wear a clumsy VR helmet while Kirk's gunners only needed to push buttons. And when implants go out of fashion, it's a chore to get on with the times...
