star trek beyond 2nd anniversary

i happened to watch star trek beyond again last after about a year. it happens that today is the second anniversary of its release in the US.

i've always been fond of the movie, but watching it again last night left me with an even greater appreciation for it. i love how the visuals of the film play to the larger theme of unity and togetherness, using repeating figures and shapes all over the screen. everything from the enterprise archive vault to the petal-like hatches on the swarm ships reinforces this motif of multiple components working together to serve a function. i also appreciated krall's hypocrisy in the face of that unity -- he's a guy who's an amalgam of all sorts of different aliens and who uses an army of drones working collectively, but believes unity is weakness.

i think from the captain's log that starts the film to the moment the enterprise saucer crashes into altamid, the film is as good as any star trek has been. the rest of it feels a lot less refined, but maybe that's the point. once the comfort of the sleek, finely tuned enterprise is gone, the movie has a rougher around the edges feel to drive that home. or it was a rushed production that wasn't fully able to iron out all the wrinkles. either way, it's a shame star trek beyond wasn't embraced by a wider audience.

but enough of my editorializing. how do you folks about star trek beyond two years later?

While I don't think it's quite up there with Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, it was a hugely enjoyable movie. At the time I said I'd be happy if they kept making 5-year-mission movies forever and I still feel the same. I loved that they saved the day with music, even if Mars Attacks! did it first. I can't wait for Star Trek 4.

Zzzzzzz.

I wanted to like Beyond, but it just felt too Insurrection-esque. Good characters in a flop of a movie. It's the only of the three Kelvinverse films that I have never had the desire to rewatch.

Let's just say that my wariness at having Justin Lin as a director was justified. Not that it was entirely his fault it was underwhelming, I'm sure the story line didn't help. It was just, 'Meh'. On the positive side it had some great space shots. I re-watch the first two back to back every so often, but I don't usually watch Beyond unless I'm doing something else while watching, like making dinner or gaming.

sorry but every time think back to July'16 can help thinking about how it should've been Orci's Days of Shatner Past movie. ok it may have turned out to be Star Trek Trinity but would've preferred it to Beyond Insurrection :sigh:

Great movie, with a heart very close to TOS I felt. Amazing visuals, all the characters had their moment in the spotlight. A shame that Idris Elba was waisted on a weak villian. But other than that, one of the most enjoyable Trek movies I feel.

I know what you mean, he would have played a restored Kirk Prime not oldPine as rumoured (I’ve blogged about it!) but I thought Beyond was great.

Much better than Into Darkness for sure !!

I enjoyed watching it in the theater, but it doesn't really hold up well on second viewing.

I think it would be a lot better had we not known the Enterprise was going to get destroyed. You can blame that on the advertising.

I like the first half hour of the movie a lot. It felt like Star Trek. We get a sense of what life is like on the Enterprise and the affects a long term space travel on the crew. I wanted the movie to stay on the ship so we could hang out with these characters. All the big spectacle action stuff that followed was obligatory and mediocre.

I absolutely loved it. It's my favorite of the Kelvin movies. I went in costume like I usually do for movies like these. I also got some sweet 50th anniversary movie posters. It was a fun exciting movie that left me awe struck.

nice icon btw.

i love the duty uniforms in star trek beyond. the ones featured in star trek 2009 were great, but by the time into darkness rolled around, they seemed a little off. beyond's version feels a lot more refined, like the costumes grew up with the characters. as did the enterprise.

Thank you. I prefer the 2009/Into Darkness uniforms. Though I wish from the start they were made of the material of the Beyond uniforms and the black collar part was a real collar and not the black undershirt of the actors. Basically the tailoring of the 2009/ID uniforms with the materials of the Beyond uniforms. :)

It's a bit special as it is the first (and so far only) Trek film my son and I saw at the cinema--but it is my least favourite of the Kelvin films (and doesn't break the top 5 of all Trek films combined, on my list). Doesn't mean I didn't like it (I even like Trek V) but I'll watch Into Darkness about 10 times for every 1 time I'll watch this film.

You give it too much credit.

On the positive side it had some great space shots.

I find it hard to describe how much I didn't like the 'swarm' and that whole sequence.

I re-watch the first two back to back every so often.

My Blurays are still in the shrinkwrap.
