i happened to watch star trek beyond again last after about a year. it happens that today is the second anniversary of its release in the US.
i've always been fond of the movie, but watching it again last night left me with an even greater appreciation for it. i love how the visuals of the film play to the larger theme of unity and togetherness, using repeating figures and shapes all over the screen. everything from the enterprise archive vault to the petal-like hatches on the swarm ships reinforces this motif of multiple components working together to serve a function. i also appreciated krall's hypocrisy in the face of that unity -- he's a guy who's an amalgam of all sorts of different aliens and who uses an army of drones working collectively, but believes unity is weakness.
i think from the captain's log that starts the film to the moment the enterprise saucer crashes into altamid, the film is as good as any star trek has been. the rest of it feels a lot less refined, but maybe that's the point. once the comfort of the sleek, finely tuned enterprise is gone, the movie has a rougher around the edges feel to drive that home. or it was a rushed production that wasn't fully able to iron out all the wrinkles. either way, it's a shame star trek beyond wasn't embraced by a wider audience.
but enough of my editorializing. how do you folks about star trek beyond two years later?
