Disney fires James Gunn from "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3"

Now, to be fair - it's not even clear that Disney has values, as a corporation, that Gunn could violate or contradict.

They have do economic interests, and lawyers who advise them on their liability where human resources are concerned.

Lol. True.
Perhaps brand would be a better term.

I think a apology was good enough. I also think a lost of respect is also a good thing. If they were racists I guess the context would matter. Would they be jokes that someone like Donald Trump would make it or would it be satire making fun of racism? The idea of anything can be funny might be true but not everything is funny if it's in the wrong context. How a joke is constructed actually matters more than the content of the joke. There is reason why "Song of the South" is racist yet "Blazing Saddles" isn't. Big difference is some racist jokes are suppose to be seen as "truths" were others your pointing out how bad racism is or how exagerated these views are. Sometimes you also have the element of shock humor as well. A kind of "Look how edgy I am. I play by my own rules" concept.

An apology is enough? So, no real consequences. Gotcha.

So who should decide Disney's business interests? Who should decide who Disney hires and fires?

As long as they obey the laws they can have control. One of the laws though shouldn't be them being able to control people's lives away from work. What you do at home on your computer and at the job have nothing in common. Whether they hire someone or fires someone should be restricted to job performance. Anything else is to much power. Granted I do believe in a few things that should be kind of forced on them. Higher taxes, diversity in the workplace which might require something like affirmitive action
Mandatory Unions for it's workers. That is about it.

Spoilers: they did follow the law. You just don’t like it.

Should Disney have been forced to keep Rosanne? When someone’s personal life is potentially doing damage to your business, you think they shouldn’t be allowed to fire them?

They absolutely do. My wife goes out and starts doing stupid shit that gains attention she would be drummed out of her job in a heartbeat. Companies care about how they look to the public. They don't want to be associated with people that could damage their brand. They have that right, in my eyes.

Of course, Mr. Gunn can seek legal remedy if he feels he was wrongly terminated.

He didn't break the law. I think that's actually a pretty good one. Of course people also are free to dislike him or not see his movies as well and like I said he might loose the respect of some friends. Being shamed is not a small thing.

The fact that he HASN'T contested the firing speaks volumes.

This situation is hilarious because of the politics involved.

Because it was Republicans that exposed James Gunn (who was a loud and infamous Anti-Trump advocate on Twitter), many Liberals are upset with Disney for firing him.

Haha.

The MCU will be fine without Gunn. Taika is way funnier and more talented anyway.

Disney made the right call, because the bad press would have been bad for the brand.

I know this happens but it shouldn't happen. Of course he can sue but people who are poor don't really have that option. It's no like the janitor living on mininum wage is going to be able to take on mighty Disney with his cheap lawyer up against their money.

I'm a pretty liberal liberal, and I have no issue with Disney firing Gunn.

I did say 'many,' not all.

I'm the opposite and I'm good with him getting fired. I think a new director could bring in new life to the Guardians films. After GOTG2 rehashing so much from the first, I didn't want things to get stale.

I was hoping someone new would be coming on, even before this controversy.

I dunno, I think the funny part is a liberal getting fired over offensive jokes; the number of liberals that defended Gunn (let alone the number of liberals that defended his statements themselves) seems to me a lot lower than that of conservatives who defended Roseanne or what she said. Of course I haven't payed that much attention to the Roseanne thing overall, so I may be wrong, but from what I gather that's the case. Oh, and of course there's also Gunn who seems pretty accepting of his firing and seems to see the reasons behind it.

:guffaw:

Yup, that's probably the case.

Were you this upset over Rosanne being fired? It was, after all, her personal life and she didn’t break the law.

Not really. Many people have learned that any response is actually worse than no response. Best thing to do is let things die out and basically shut up until people get bored and move on to the next target. Looks like Trevor Noah might be next up. He must know he isn't getting the job back and from what I understand he wasn't even fully into the idea of doing a third to begin with. At this point I am guessing he is thinking about future movies. You don't want to end up like Roseanne were your literally having a nervous breakdown and yelling at people. Anybody see that video? Looks a little like "Last known sighting" territory. Got a feeling the next story about her is going to be the one talking about her suicide.
