Season 2 Teaser

I have to say I don't care for this trailer at all. I don't mind the inclusion of action, humor and modern music, but I don't think the music really did anything for the trailer, nor was the action particularly engaging. The humor leaned very heavily towards stupid for stupid's sake (incompetence and snot jokes) which is exactly the wrong direction to take it. Tilly's math moment was a much better example of the kind of humor that fits well in this show, because its built on the characters, not forced on them.

The story hints were vague and didn't do much for me either way. It sounds like a perfectly serviceable and generic little quest, which I'm sure will make more sense and be more engaging in the actual show, but the trailer gives me nothing to get excited about there.

And Anson Mount is fine, but nothing special. And for that nothing special we get multiple scenes setting up his character and pretty much nothing for all the returning characters who are the actual reason I'm tuning in to see the show.

Overall, I don't think it's a big deal. This trailer is obviously made to make the show look brand spanking new in every facet that people complained about in season 1, but I highly doubt the show will actually make that massive of a u-turn. At this point, I'm still expecting the show itself to be much better balanced and well built up than the trailer is, and I'm still hoping the writing quality will also be smoother simply by virtue of not having the behind the scenes drama that season 1 had.

Wow! I really like the trailer!

Pike got my attention, the red dots in space setup has piqued my interest, and the overall production value / visual shots look incredible (and so much better than season 1, imo).

As others have mentioned, it does look fun, and that’s a good thing as far as I’m concerned...

I suspect it will come down to that. Pike will be the *star* of the next season.

This is an awful, stupid, fanwanky idea that would simultaneously cheese off my canonista side and my "let's forget canon and just have good stories" side. I cannot believe any working Hollywood writer would be so stupid as to try this.

It is therefore certainly correct. I told people that even the bad writing staff on Discovery wouldn't be so bad at their jobs as to make Voq vanish a week after his reappearance. I told people that even the bad writing staff on Discovery would never sacrifice so much of their season for a tweeeeeest reveal that Lorca was his own Mirror counterpart. Wrong both times. There is no depth of awful, hackneyed tweeeeest writing the Discovery writing room will not plumb.

I'm not going to comment on the rest of the trailer because I can tell my reaction is colored by my hostility to the show. I would have laughed at the "sneeze" moment on Enterprise, but rolled my eyes here. So that's on me, and I'll wait for the season to air before forming a judgment.
I kind of agree :bolian:

What's wrong with a snot joke? Especially when the snot is coming from a funny looking alien. Alien snot equals funny. Human snot equals gross.

Jason

Wow! That looked like a Star Trek show!
As in - the thing we should have gotten last year.
I know this is just a trailer, but hell yeah, I like it!

Stuff I liked:
  • Exploration of something as a theme! I can't even... It's almost like.... Star Trek...
  • That Detmer/Owosekun reaction! It wasn't exactly funny. but it was human.
  • Colorful uniforms! At least for a few seconds...
  • There is not a single phaser or photon torpedo shot in this trailer! Damn straight. Somebody apparently has noticed that not all scifi shows MUST be centered around space war...
  • The CGI has noticeably improved - amazing what you can do with that big a budget if you don't blow it all on creative differences!
  • They have slightly altered the Discovery herself: Better color scheme, more details, ... looking good!
  • Their corridor set now has visible pipes on the wall!!!!
  • Action scenes that are not about shooting bad guys. Well done!
  • "This is the power of math, people!"
  • Nice new spacesuit props! Liked the all CGi-suit in the pilot. But now having real props for everyone hopefully means more spacesuit action as well!
  • No sight of klingons, Section 31 or other familiar species horribly wrecked up! If they appear (they will), hopefully it's just for self-contained side plot episodes?
  • Pike stylish 60's leading man look
  • The elevator gag - It wasn't funny. Like, really not. But I like that they are at least trying to incorporate humor again.

Stuff I didn't like:
  • Burnham's voice over was as dour as the ones in S1. Hopefully this is just their only attempt to connect this "rebooted" season to the crappy first one!:guffaw:
  • The inclusion of the Enterprise does nothing for me - this is not the real Enterprise, and it really shouldn't be there at this point in the series. Also - she has a bridge window-.-
  • Anson Mount as Pike... He looks like Jeffrey Hunter (moreso than Bruce Greenwood). But like in "Inhumans", this guy has the charisma of a loaf of bread. A stark contrast to screen talen Jason Isaacs. But hey, at least we have a white, male lead again to appease the Internet...
  • Spock....:barf2: Can't you leave Britney...er Spock alone?
  • Is that an... angel... at 0:17? Please don't let them do the whole angels/demon stuff in their "science vs. faith" theme
  • Where's Stamets?
  • That black neck-collar on Pike's uniform is...off-putting

Overall, this looks exciting!
Like, even if this whole main arc turns out to be utter schlock - I give them so much credit for trying. This really feels like a trailer for a Star Trek show. With exploration, science and shit. Would I have prefered a sow set in the 24th century? Yes. But given the craptacular starting position of Season 1 they have to work off of - THIS is a complete, awesome turn-around!
I love it so far!

Where some see “Season II”, I see megaschlock and fanwank. Set to Lenny Kravitz , no less.

I yearn for the day TV trek won’t be a screenwriters graveyard.

Where's Stamets?

Blink and you'll miss him so far. Same for Tilly.

This looks promising. Both visually and tone-wise this seems like a huge improvement. I even liked the music (way better than Beastie Boys.)

I am a bit worried about the plot. This red spot thing is probably some huge galaxy (or universe) threatening nonsense threat they have to deal with. These sort of stories rarely work well, I would have preferred something in smaller scale (really, what's wrong with dealing with things in a scale of single planet? Most classic Trek stories were like that.) But we'll see. Hopefully this will at least be related to closing the mushroom space for good so we can forget about that.

Okay enough with this TMP nonsense from you, you're going in circles. And I've refuted those tired points before.

If you want to respond to my posts and start a discussion, bring something new to the table.

Since I didn't rear those refutations, I thought bringing up TMP was pretty good: 18 months and POOF! Everything's different. Complaints: zero.

Looks very cornball.

They're trying so hard to make this show "cool" but it looks as dorky as ever.

TNG and DS9 and VOY were pretty dorky. Kelvinverse movies were "cool". So what's left that's not implied to be bad?

I told people that even the bad writing staff on Discovery wouldn't be so bad at their jobs as to make Voq vanish a week after his reappearance. I told people that even the bad writing staff on Discovery would never sacrifice so much of their season for a tweeeeeest reveal that Lorca was his own Mirror counterpart. Wrong both times.

What's wrong with mirror Lorca?

IMHO, it's still too "try-hard".

Feels like a bunch of checklists aimed at pandering to a particular demographic.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

But TOS callbacks? That's another story. IMHO those were consistently among the best episodes of the Berman-era series, and I wouldn't have minded more.

Assuming you're correct, it's one more reason to stick with the TOS era.

Oh, c'mon. Any self-respecting Trek fan knows who Robert April is!

Do you think that self-respecting Trek fans are the bulk of the audience here?

"Not the real Enterprise". That's so ridiculous.

But like in "Inhumans", this guy has the charisma of a loaf of bread.

Give the dude a chance. At least now he can talk.

But hey, at least we have a white, male lead again to appease the Internet...

If you wanted to appease the internet wouldn't the captain be a trans female bisexual half-african half-samoan?

Really, who cares what gender or colour he is? I thought Star Trek taught us that this stuff isn't important.

Stamets is smiling? Seems to have gotten over Culber kind of quick. Which actually makes me wonder if he is still in their plans now that the old writers are out.

Jason
I think Culber's actor said at the con that he'd be back in some form so I think that's still part of their plans.

Colorful uniforms! At least for a few seconds...
I (unexpectedly) really like the rebooted Enterprise unis. They look so much more “Star Trek” than the disco ones. The disco ones look odd when the crews are stood side by side I feel.

Their corridor set now has visible pipes on the wall!!!!
I missed that! That’s a good sign!

Burnham's voice over was as dour as the ones in S1.
I need to find a way to get over the irritation I feel whenever Michael says anything. She was so insufferable and unlikable in s1 that I was grinding my teeth from the minute she started speaking

Come on Mike, chill out a little - let us like you...

Is that an... angel... at 0:17?
I thought romulan symbol when I first saw it but maybe they’re going the whole Apollo was an alien route and saying that angels are aliens too

Overall, this looks exciting!
Despite being a discoskeptic, I agree :)

This makes me think of the Tilly 10 minutes web-episode. Her story is going to be about a early story or something dealing with a partner so I could see her and Culber becoming friends on her first day aboard or something like that.

Jason

The funny thing is i was ready to give up on this show then they went through the Mirror then again at the end but then the Enterprise showed up. :P

I can see how they say they're 'connecting to the canon', I guessed that Pike would temporarily be the new Discovery captain. Also the trailer seems brighter and more optimistic. Dare I say it but for Adult Spock I wonder if they're waiting for Quinto to have a window in his diary? Despite there being a new Pike that would maybe add some familiarity for skeptics who enjoyed the movies.

I love the irony that Pike, Number One and Spock are taking Trek back to Roddenberry's original idea from before the first season of Trek even got made! Even though this is 'Discovery' still with that ensemble, not 'Early Voyages'.

I'm slightly disappointed I've heard no news on the proposed projects in development - I hope Sir Pat hasn't backed out!
