Season 2 Teaser

The "early 2019" part is disappointing, I was hoping for "late 2018". I suspect it will be very early in 2019, as they would want to stay clear of the juggernaut that will be the final season of Game of Thrones (which will absorb all the media attention when it starts).

They have four short films I believe released right before.

I'm sure someone else (or many someones) has already mentioned something similar in the thread, but I finally just saw the trailer and I have a theory.

I think they may be setting up a merge of the Kelvinverse and the Primeverse.

Those sure looked a hell of a lot like Red Matter detonations in that region of space where they were going to investigate the galaxy-threatening emergency situation. And it's somehow tied to YoungPrimeSpock in a way and caused his leave of absence. What if the death of OldPrimeSpock in the Kelvinverse somehow caused a psychic connection to form through the Mycelial Network underlying the universe and connecting all points in time and space, including alternate universes, and that summoned YoungPrimeSpock to the source of the Red Matter events, much like V'Ger would later call to him from across the galaxy?

Much like how Abrams said the ripples from the event that formed the Kelvinverse traveled both forwards and backwards through time, it could be used as a justification for the aesthetic and historical changes in DSC and bring the two disparate timelines into alignment, simplifying things and allowing people from both universes to appear without having to create any more elaborate Treknobbable justifications to do so after this initial event.

I think it's basically setting up the Trek version of Crisis on Infinite Earths. Of course, I'm just talking out of my ass here and may be reading too much into it, but with all the Kelvinverse nods (the Kelvinverse warp effect, Pike saying "hit it!", the Red Matter supernova-like explosions, and the connection that draws in PrimeSpock) that was the first vibe I was getting from the trailer.

The trailer was awesome by the way. Loved loved loved the heavy exploration theme, loved the action-ey bits in the repair pods (Their version of Workbees?), loved the humor with Tilly and the elevator scene. The music was perfect and upbeat and fun, and the mysterious but upbeat tone was exactly what I had hoped for from a show with this title. I'm really looking forward to this season.

A million times this.
I think a good example is a lot of what I've read about the Buffy reboot today. That is a lot of people suggesting a "darker version," surely based on the idea that the original was laugh out loud funny.

It was also dark. Sometimes really dark.

Yup.

Or rather, so goes the CBS/Paramount dealings so goes the show.

Is it just me or does the Discovery seem less... bronze on the exterior? Maybe its just the lighting.

Her hull lettering is also black instead of white here

They've significantly calmed down the gold and the shine of the Discovery. The lettering appears black now and the sensor dome less blue. The visuals across the board sharpened. More traditional black space, less saturation, and not the fuzzy chromatic look. Unless they stop at a space station and get a new paint job, it looks like they just made some good improvements we simply accept.

Pike captaining the Discovery was a fun and interesting choice. I enjoyed the tone the trailer was going for, and seeing the new uniform was a nice nod. A shame Discovery isn't adopting the new uniforms, but the trailer seemed to point toward a more ensemble cast with an emphasis toward fun that never seemed to fit in season one. I'm skeptical but hopeful for what season two might bring. I like the trailer. Glad it didn't show any Klingons, and excited to see what this new mystery has to bring for the second season.

It all comes back to the writing and the execution. I want so badly for this to be good.

Someone likes Michael? I haven’t heard that before.

You've heard it now. I like Mike. They even made a jingle out of it back in the '50s. "You like Mike. I like Mike. Everybody likes Mike." Oh, wait. That was Ike. But even still.

Pike captaining the Discovery was a fun and interesting choice.

Yup. It's something different. And we get to see more of Prime Pike as Captain.

Looks very cornball.

They're trying so hard to make this show "cool" but it looks as dorky as ever.

I enjoyed the trailer. Even though they were having fun.....

Juuust kidding. Glad to see the trailer emphasizing fun. It's a hopeful sign that S2 could be more enjoyable than S1.

The look is great. Not a deal breaker to be seen.

Well, the word "red" in "red bursts" is certainly oddly suggestive of that. Isn't it?
