Casting Pike's Number One

^ Ouch? Where's the ouch?

I mean, is there any REASON to invent a ridiculously convoluted explanation for the phrase "Number One"? That's a common nickname for a starship's first officer, and everyone knows it. Why make things any more complicated than that?

Yikes. Didn't know a member of this forum wrote that Novel.

If it's any consolation, I didn't read it. I just read the summary of the Una storyline. I'm sure the novel itself was written well.

I'm still pulling for Number One to be Chapel's sister.

I don't want her to be an alien. She looks too human, and I'd prefer the aliens of modern day trek to look very alien... since this is a visual reboot.

She can just be a human with a very well trained mind.

Well she isn't an Alien.

No, there isn't. I couldn't agree with you more than I do. All due respect to Mr. Cox (and others novelists), but the hoops that have been jumped through the last 50 years trying to explain why that character was called "Number One" are beyond ridiculous. Especially after we had another captain use the term for another XO in TNG. Of course this is Trek fandom. Why use a simple explanation when there is a much more convoluted and silly explanation to be found?

Rebecca Romijn is pretty good in The Librarians as Colonel Baird, imo. She plays an initially pretty no-nonsense, professional soldiery type who slowly warms up to the other Librarian characters and ends up being really invested in their collective well-being. While she doesn't bear a close resemblance to Majel Barrett, I think she could convey core aspects of the character (the little that we saw of her). I can totally see Rebecca pulling off a great Number One.

That said, I am going to expect that we won't see that much of her. She won't be central to the plot like Pike appears to be.

I don't think it really matter whether or not she resembles Majel, to me she doesn't. But she is a very good actress. We also got our answer to another question in the SDCC STD trailer for S2: who will be Discovery's Captain: Pike. I'm actually liking that decision.

What's interesting about Rebecca is she's 5'11, and has that Amazon superhero look.

Quite a re-imagining of the Majel Number One.

I hope she has a decent sized role in the series. I can already see everyone shipping her with Anson Mount's Pike in the weirder regions of the fandom.

A Trek show with those two as the leads would have been... interesting.

Greg has been writing Star Trek novels for a long time. He was even interviewed for a Wrath of Khan DVD bonus feature. It's his Khan novels that the rumored Khan mini-series will be superseding.
