Adding some gradual wear and tear on the sets at the start of each season. Some scuffs or burns on the walls. A few cables hanging overhead in engineering, like a permanent bypass for some wrecked and irreparable systems. Voyager went through too much to look factory fresh every week.
I have mixed feelings about this. Yes it may be more interesting, but the way I always see it. They had a lot of time just flying in a straight line with not much going on. They had plenty of time to fix things and touch up damage. Personally I don't need to see them doing it to know they are fixing things. But what may have been more interesting is more modified systems. In the beginnig they mentioned converting some systems off the gel packs to create spare packs. maybe we could have seen some kind of *insert technobable machine* in engineering that they slapped together to do *technobabble*. It would be one of those things that Janeway mentioned...how B'Elanna seems to go out of her way to come up with solutions that defy starfleet protocols.
Which early episode was it where Janeway and Chakotay are talking about setting up a refinery on board for Torres to have a place to refine the minerals and compounds they needed to fix the ship or keep it running? I want to be able to point out that scene for anyone who harps on about "How could they keep the ship so perfect"? And like I've said before, it is at least mentioned in many episodes that they are looking for or trading with DQ natives for supplies.

CHAKOTAY: Lieutenant Torres has already asked permission to start modifications to the auxiliary impulse reactor. It could be converted into a crude dilithium refinery. JANEWAY: The impulse reactor? Sometimes I think B'Elanna goes out of her way to find solutions that ignore Starfleet procedures. It's funny to me, when people try to point out such things they must not have watched the show carefully. The conversation generally goes like this: "Oh Voyager never did this" "they did it in episode XXXX" "Voyager did this too much" "They did it less than or the same as TNG/DS9 did"
Sophie> I can't speak for everyone else but for me it's memory issues. I don't recall the show like I could 10 years ago. It's probably sleep deprivation at this point. Now I get why Kate makes desperate face to recall something for a fan. She was physically on set and most of it is a blur now.
I agree. I know more now after watching with hubby who is a first timer and i get Netflix so i don't have to go back 2 decades to remember.
I don't know if it's a small change, as it would have affected all the episodes that came after at least to some degree -- but I would have liked to see Seska's baby actually be Chakotay's, and remain on Voyager after "Basics." First, because to me it always seemed like a weak payoff to that whole storyline, to have the baby be Culluh's and simply disappear from the picture; second, because it would have added some dimension to Chakotay to see him as a parent, especially of a son he'd gained in such a way.
These aren't small changes... but... Keep both Kes and Seven. Pop Seven in a normal uniform like she was a 'specialist' (did it on 'Discovery' for Michael). I know Seven wasn't Starfleet but it would have been appropriate and make her part of her new collective - the Voyager family. There should have been some kind of pet or animal aboard. Thumbs up to 'Enterprise' for doing that. Voyager should have saved the Species 8472 in 'Prey'. Should have been more offspring on board too They would have been at it like rabbits.
Every time I see people doing small changes to Voyager to improve it I think of one of those Myriad Universe stories by Chris Bennett which started out as a whole butterfly flaps its wings type thing (possibly the only one to show us the key point where time changed) and then seemed to go through a list of every complaint about Voyager right down to the flappy nacells.Off the top of my head others ones were more pay off in the split between the Maquis and Starfleet, Seven in decent clothing (with some lip service paid toward how she dressed in the show), a build up to a new U.F.P in the delta quadrant that became a key plot. I'm putting that forward as my suggestion by the way. I know it's a long list, for those who read the story but they are all rather small changes.
I never realized people complained about the moving nacelles. I've been posting for many years and I've not seen people complain about that.
I remember it being a thing aaaaages ago when the show was first on up till about I want to say season four. They're kind of like the starship equivalent of supermans underpants i.m.o. It could have just been the corners of the internet I was hanging around in but I do remember people mocking them and a few of the more die hards complaining that they were blocked by the bridge and thus couldn't work.
As I say this was ages ago and I haven't seen it brought up in a while. It was just that this story seemed to make a point of going through a general list of what people generally complained about on the show and that was one of them. I think the only thing that hurts them i.m.o is the lack of them on the big E or the fact that we haven't got any post Nemesis movies to see another ship with them meaning that even now when you line the Star Trek main ships up it stands out a little.
My head canon is that they were a test on Voyager kind of like the gel packs and going forward they were able to make the variable warp geometry work with stationary nacelles. Or that the Enterprise was too big for it and the movable nacelles were a thing for smaller faster ships.
Makes sense, as I say I think it would have been nice to have it on one or two other ships in the fleet. However I understand you don't want to spend more time and money inserting a brand new ship into a tng movie just for that especially considering that DS9 only used old ships for it's armadas? (I think they stole some from First Contact but I could be wrong on that)
I always thought it was a very cool concept. It was one of the things (along with being able to land) that I liked about Voyager the ship. Although I've always thought the Enterprise D was the most attractive ship.
I liked the look and feel of Voyager best as well. The movable nacelles made sense to me, at least on a smaller, scout type ship.
