What If: Kirk didn't die on Viridian 3?

The novel "Engines of Destiny" by Gene DeWeese actually does just that. In that case it's Scotty who saves Kirk just before he is 'lost.' Scotty had felt guilty because he felt he did not do enough to prevent Kirk's 'death.'
I read the book when it first came out but I didn't think much of it. I barely remember anything at all about it at this point.

I guess that lends credence to the idea that Star Trek has a wide variety of fans that like many different things. I loved the book and it's exploration of altering the past and the consequences that it can cause.

Especially in this book how Kirk not being in the Nexus meant Picard was not successful in Generations and was therefore not around for First Contact.

Besides, Prime Spock recognized both Kirk and Scotty.
Which the comics addressed as Spock Prime remembering meeting the Kelvin timeline crew.
Why would Kirk want to join Starfleet? He was retired at GEN.
In the Shatnerverse novels, he didn't want to, indeed Starfleet was actually offended when he didn't re-enlist at the outbreak of the Dominion War like all the other retired officers did. However, situations arose in which Kirk required Starfleet assistance, and the price for that assistance was his re-enlisting for the duration of the war, and a required term of two years after the war ended.

It's always been my contention that Kirk is still alive in the Nexus, since time has no meaning there. The Kirk who died in the 'real' universe was more like a temporal avatar projection, or some weird thing like that.

If there was any debate as to the authenticity of Kirk's death in GEN, then ... why hasn't Shatner been allowed to return to the franchise in all these many decades?

I'd say that the real Kirk did die on Veridian III but his echo or a part of him still exists in the Nexus! and are we really sure that he actually left it? And if he is truly dead, did he die on Veridian III or saving the refugees on board the Enterprise B..?

...I don't understand the question. Kirk didn't die on Veridian III. His echo did. The real Kirk was rescued by Spock in the 23rd century as soon as Spock heard that Kirk was missing and presumed dead.

Anything else is out of character, IMO. ;)

Agreed. No way he would let it be, after the events of II-IV, which included his ressurection, time traveling and Kirk's career suicide. He would feel *obligated* to the *highest* level to return the favor to his friend.... his brother.

The extra narrative this creates for the TNG movies is just a bonus.... (Picard Nexus fantasies) and leaves a secret end-of-his-years storyline for the real Kirk as well... perhaps he was hidden after his return, to preserve the timeline from interference, especially if it was perhaps an older Spock who undertook this mission and needed some of the intervening years to remain static.

We aren't debating that just throwing out ideas of what would have happened to the character if he had survived

I sometimes think that whole movie takes place in the Nexus.

How would we definitely know if Picard and Kirk really left the Nexus?
When their horses disappear, they've left the Nexus. Which could have made an interesting fake-out ending to that movie.
Picard: We're only mortal, Will.
Riker: Speak for yourself, sir. I plan to live forever.
A horse suddenly appears on the bridge in front of Picard and Riker.
Picard: Well, shit.
