They'd be more likely to say The Doctor then clown. They'd certainly guess he's the Doctor before guessing that 13 is The Doctor (just based off costume).

    I approve.
The music is great. Listened to all tracks there and the guy is very versatile.
Totally different style from Murray, too.

Um okay. I guess I don't think that would happen, but I guess it was a hypothetical question anyway.

The thing about Bakers costume is it is plainly a ‘Doctor’ costume, in terms of its generally edwardian style. Ignoring the patchwork colours, it’s Hartnell, Troughton, even Tom, and is almost identical to McGann.
Anyone watching as far as frontios is going to see question marks on the shirt collar, and Tom Baker started the ‘decoration on left lapel of frock coat’ tradition.
So it’s pretty much Doctor Default....it’s only the patchwork that is different.

With Jodie’s outfit, there is undoubtedly the style of a CBeebies presenter goin on, which I am not sure works. She would benefit from either the Doctor default option, or going more steampunk adventuress.

I was on a panel about the thirteenth Doctor at the Farpoint convention back in February, and when we were talking about the costume, which had been revealed at that point, and I said something like, "I wasn't sure about the costume at first, but the more I looked at it and thought about it, the more it made sense to me as a Doctor outfit. Maybe it's the boots, but I keep thinking that it's a Matt Smith-style costume." And then a woman in the back of the room, a look of shock on her face, exclaimed, "Yeah! Matt totally would have worn that!" :)

The problem we have at the moment is that we don't know how the costume "works" in motion. Still photos don't really sell it. I've seen art sketches of it that make more sense.

That said, I still wish Jodie Whittaker could wear the Capaldi costume from "Twice Upon a Time." As the leaked clip shows, she really rocks the suit, much as Lucy Liu rocks her suits on Elementary. Yet I recognize that she needs her own, defining look, and aping late Capaldi wouldn't be a good branding move.

It’s a very slippery slope. And yes, Colin was always slipping down it too.

Between Tom Baker and McGann, the costumes were always just that, costumes. As opposed to clothes...you can tell the difference between something made to be worn every day, and some made to be an outfit in a show. (Actually, McCoy manages to get some decent threads to be fair, as did Ace.)
This (and a few of Capaldis outfits and the purple Smith outfit...) is a step back towards overly designed, somewhat cheap fabric looking, costumes. Adjusting something off the peg with a few details has worked well for who in the past.

Eh, I didn't like Eccleston's outfit at first because it seemed too... normal. But it grew on me through his season, and opened the door for outfits beyond the Edwardian Doctor Who norm, so now these costumes don't bother me. What I would actually like more is for them to come up with less of a costume and more of a style, because no one I know wears the same two outfits every day (Farscape suffered from this as well, as I am doing a rewatch). Capaldi came closest to this in his hoodie phase.

Most sane people with any larger cultural context would say "Clown." That's a clown's motley that your avatar is wearing.

Just declaring otherwise for the sake of not conceding that you've been bested in that exchange with Jinn is not persuasive.

A clowns motley, at a time such a thing was out of favour, and the motley was utterly part of the character as written. And it’s also not a clowns motley as such. What it is standard who Edwardian (patterned after Hartnell, and Baker the first, seen again in McGann) in motley fabrics.

Umm. No. Just no. And Colin Baker agrees with the notion that the costume is terrible.

I believe he liked the costume, but not so many colours.
Ironically, it made him an excellent comic book doctor. (Voyager)

He wanted an all-black costume, as I recall, but JNT felt that would be too similar to the Master. So, we end up with that multi-colored thing (which, honestly, I think is fine) which reflects, I guess, JNT's own sartorial tastes.

Voyager was awesome. And it helps enormously that the colors don't come through in the black and while illustrations. :)

I gotta be honest here. Steve Parkhouse is, imho, one of the best Doctor Who writers of all time.

I've heard him say in interviews that he feels sorry for those who have to look at the costume and that he was fortunate because he was in it and looking out (i.e., he didn't have to see it)!

So, no, he didn't like it and, as Allyn points out, wanted something different. I think he also asked for a leather jacket.

He liked the shape of the costume, apparently, it was all the technicolour stuff he disliked as I remember.. (hence the plainer blue version popping up come the audios.) The leather jacket thing comes from him commenting on Chris Ecclestone, and saying that’s what he wanted for his Doctor.
The middle ground on this is that we have to imagine him as the Marquis De Carabas in neverwhere. Which isn’t that hard, as the Sixth Doctor and the Marquis are about a fag papers width apart in some scenes.

I don’t know if this has been posted yet, but a clip has been leaked. Also images of what is probably the new sonic.

EDIT: whoops! Just looked to the previous page in the thread. Never mind!

I have the colour version with the afterword by Baker. The costume works a treat. XD
