Voyager fans.. are you disappointed about Discovery?

I must be honest and admit that I haven't watched any episode, only trailers.
But I just had to see the Turtles to realize that this is another "Star Trek" series where established Trek history is screwed up again.
If they are doing a TOS timeline series, then it should look like TOS.

I shall be honest, I do not care for the show.
I do not find the characters or the storylines of the series interesting, and I do not like the changes to the lore/continuity.
For me it doesn't tie into the Original Series at all, more recycling ideas of that.

I am disappointed in Discovery mostly for superficial reasons, but overall, I honestly do feel that this series is still in its growing pains ... there is a lot of untapped potential, here. My main issues are with the Art Direction. I hate most of the sets on this ship (though the ship itself is alright) and the uniforms are particularly offputting. I do not care for certain characters, but what can you do? I love TNG with a zealot's passion, but I cannot stand Lwaxana Troi, or Reginald Barclay, amongst others. It can't be avoided with these shows. I DO like how different it's trying to be from STAR TREK television, as we've known it. For example, how - for the first time - the star of the show is not the captain of the ship. In the end, it's just difference for difference's sake, but it's appreciated. I feel that the show should be more fun, overall, and that the writing could definitely improve.

I believe that once Discovery has found itself, it will be one hell of a show. It may even break the cycle of 7 year series and go way beyond that, which would be quite historic for this franchise. When Enterprise hit it's 3rd year, it was like "FINALLY!!!" the show got GOOD! It had its own "voice," it's own style, and it seemed like everything was coming together, for a change. Unfortunately, they changed things up, yet again, for the fourth season where the texture, the flavour of the show wasn't quite the same and that was disappointing. I hope that when Discovery pins down it's own identity, they run with it. Were I to rate this show on a scale of 1 to 100% in terms of how decent it is, I'd rate it at, uh ... I don't know ... it's about 75% of where it should be, I'd say. But I just hope that it realises that being more fun doesn't mean being more like The Orville, because Orville doesn't own the corner on the market of fun ... even in Sci-Fi. STAR WARS is fun, for example. Just let Discovery continue to be it's own thing, whatever happens ...

I really like Discovery. It's not perfect but I'm just happy to have Star Trek on television again. I think the first season suffered a lot from the last minute departure of Bryan Fuller and I think the current showrunners got left with a story arc that they weren't engaged by.

Discovery has so much potential and hopefully it will find it's feet in season 2.

Discovery has so much potential and hopefully it will find it's feet in season 2.

However, I don't think that I will like this series, mainly because of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles who are supposed to be Klingons but also because the whole thing is a lame attempt to come up with some sort of new TOS.

If they want to do a series in the TOS trimeline, then it should look like TOS when it comes to uniforms, ships, equipment and such and no Turtles. Either the TOS Klingons or the TOS movie Klingons.

They should also do like they did in that DS9 tribble episode where they managed to include sequences from TOS episodes with Kirk, Spock and the others which did look very natural.

I also get the impression that Discovery is a typical "doom and gloom" series which I see as a futile sell-out to current trends in the SF-worlds, a sell-out unworthy as phenomenon like Star Trek with its positive view on the future.

In other words, this is nothing for me. Not when I have TOS, TNG, DS9 and Voyager to watch.

A small correction here:

I have watched seasons 4-6 up to a certain season 6 episode once before. After "The Gift" I did stop watching Voyager for two years but then I canged my mind and started to rent VHS tapes from a shop close to where I lived then in order to catch up with the local channel's airing of the show.

I did spend a certain amount of money on renting those tapes and honestly, I wasn't that impressed. There were some good episodes, like "Nemesis", "Blink Of An Eye" and the Equinox episodes. But something important was missing!

A certain episode in season 6 made me quit in anger. The only episode I watched after that horrible experiment was "Endgame" because I wanted to see what happened to our heroes in the last episode. I remember that I finally decided to watch "Endgame" about 30 seconds before it started and afterwards I regretted that I had watched it. A horrible episode!

Anyway, if I decide to watch seasons 4-7,then season 7 will be new for me, except "Endgame".

But here's a surpriiiiiiiize for ya!

I've actually ordered season 4 on DVD!

Most of all because I want to have "Nemesis" on DVD. The tape I have with the episode have clear signs of being wear out and may not last that long. Then we'll see what will happen. Maybe I buy season 5 because my favorite season 4-7 character is in one of the episodes there.

And if I find a way to wipe out a certain episode of season 6 from the DVD I might go for season 6 too!

I must add that i've never understod what those in charge were thinking when they started to make retro series.

I mean, here we had this wonderful 24th century universe with all those interesting species, all the development in series like TNG, DS9 and Voyager, all those stories and all those possibilities with hundreds of loose ends to follow upp. The opportunities for good story telling were endless.

And what do they do? They revert back to pre-TOS and start making lame attempts to recreate TOS or whatever and therefore we have all those movies and series where established Trek history is screwed up, certain species are ruined or twisted into something they would never supposed to be and the storytelling is full with flaws and contradictions.

I'm beginning to think that when Berman and his gang made that move and came up with "Enterprise", now that was the beginning of the end for Star Trek.

They may eventually do something set after Voyager (Star Wars fans were flat out told there would never be movies set after Return of the Jedi and they believed it for decades but look where we are now), but it probably won't look or feel the same any more than the Kelvin movies or Discovery do.

I think Enterprise was about as 'retro' as they needed to go. TNG, DS 9 and Voyager were actually really embraced given each had seven seasons to back up the interest in them. TOS is old. Done to death. Discovery is trying to suck off that and it is failing.

I see your point. But the reason that the "Berman era shows" were going down were because there had been almost an overkill of Star Trek for many yeras with three series and several movies. It was actually time for a break.

The final Next Generation movie flopped because the story was badly written.

That the retro movies were such a succes was because Trek fans were starved after yeras of no Star Trek and they would accept anything just to have anything Star Trek going.

There were a loty of people who weren't that happy with those movies but they thought that "It's Star Trek after all".

Those who are in charge of Star trek should realize that they can never replace the old TOS with those new series or movies, especially not when they mess up everything which was established in TOS and the following series. What they are doing now is flogging a dead horse to squeeze out the last money there is to squeeze out while slowly killing Star Trek.

Unfortunately, it's all about money and therefore shows like Star Trek are run by people with wallets insetad of brains and pieces of led instead of souls.
