I don't think it's likely that my advice will be heeded, but that doesn't mean I can't put it out there.

Correct. That's set in stone, as far as I am concerned. I doubt Rey's parents will even be mentioned.

Episode IX: Luke's "Force ghost" has not appeared at all to give Rey any kind of guidance. She has been completely alone in her exploration of the ways of "The Force." And over the years of galactic conflict and turmoil, a battle-hardened Rey has become more and more of a hard liner for the old Jedi ways as she has studied those musty old books that she swiped in TLJ, along with some discovered archives from the Old Republic. So we once again have an aloof Jedi order which looks down on the rest of the galaxy from way up in their ivory tower, forbids personal attachments, conscripts Force-sensitive younglings, discourages any variation from Jedi orthodox teachings, etc, etc.

I think we will get back to the basics of being a Jedi. I don't think we've seen that in a Star Wars film to date. (I do believe that Luke will not be helping Rey, but will be haunting Kylo.)

To me, old Ben and Yoda from the OT embody the essence of Jedi-ness, having divested themselves of the baggage of the PT-era Jedi Order.

While they may have been close, I think they were even weighed down by things from the past.

Seeing as Luke embodied the Jedi ideal as explained by Grouchy Yoda "A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack" I would like to say that TLJ FINALLY showed a Jedi Master working as a Master should instead of slicing and dicing at the head of copycat slaves.

One final note - Luke spends a few days (weeks?) doing mud runs with Yoda in his backpack, isn't able to lift an X-wing out of the water, runs off and gets his hand chopped off... then a few weeks later stands before Ol' leatherface and says "I am a Jedi, like my father before me"
Rey, conversely, has never made such a claim, and yet people are up in arms that she's a "Mary Sue"

When folks would get up in arms about JJTrek - their objections often revealed that they were judging '09 Trek based on TNG not TOS - and '09 Trek (arguably) based its character development, style, and overall structure on TOS, not TNG.

I find that the opposition to TFA and TLJ often is based on similar hidden biases - in this case a preference for the stories and character notes found in the prequels and expanded universe, when in fact both TFA and TLJ take a LOT of cues from the Original Trilogy.
For example - the opposition to Snoke's death. The Emperor in the original trilogy was briefly introduced (oh, Vader's got a boss) given a few minutes of gloating screen time, and then offed by his apprentice/buddy.
Snoke was introduced as the big baddie, give some gloating screen time, then offed.
However, in the prequels both the Emperor and Count Dooku were given some extry backstory, lots of monologues and Dooku was killed, but not before he had significant screen time.
So TLJ took cues in how it turned Snoke into Sno ke, but for so many viewers, THEIR formative ideas about Star Wars were informed by the prequels, thus they found that plotline to be highly objectionable.

This point, right here. There are so many hidden biases, attitudes and opinions on what Star Wars should be that it doesn't invest in what is actually presented. I think the anger comes not from the content, but that it failed to meet preconceived notions.

Kinda like this? (especially from 0:43 on)

Wait a sec. You're vastly mis-representing the timeline. Luke got is hand chopped off, then went back to training for THREE YEARS before Yoda declares that he's done and is a Jedi (after he faces Vader again).

What training did he go back to? My impression was that his meeting with Yoda in ROTJ was the first time he had seen him since leaving. Also, I don't believe there is a 3 year gap between ESB and ROTJ.

I always got the impression that at least several months had passed between ESB and ROTJ. It took time for the rebels to regroup, then to plan and execute Han's rescue. Official sources put the events of ROTJ in the year after the events of ESB.

OK, it may not have been three years, but I think there's enough in the film to suggest that a significant amount of time has passed between ESB and ROTJ. That is, they didn't just chase after Han immediately. The entire operation took planning, and in this time Luke went back to Dagobah and trained. His returning to Yoda after Han's rescue was because he had to break training when the plan was ready to execute. By this point, it's clear he has a much better control of the Force than on Bespin.

Yeah, I never had that impression that Luke took the time to return to Dagobah. I always operated with the impression that he had spent whatever time had elapses (months, at most) to plan and meet up with Lando.

ETA: Ok, wookiepedia has 1 year.

Where are you pulling this from?

Even the novels didn’t really go that route. Or at least, their primary continuity didn’t.

    Head canon and common sense?

Look at what ROTJ shows us: a controlled Luke who looks like a Jedi, talks like a Jedi, acts like a Jedi -- and calls himself a Jedi. Nothing like the kid who got his hand chopped off and ass handed to him at Bespin. Lando has clearly been in Jabba's palace long enough to not appear conspicuous. The droids were dropped off some time before Luke shows up. etc... etc... etc...

Even as a young kid, I had the impression that Han was in carbon freeze for at least a couple years. I even "froze" my Han action figure in a LEGO case with a wet Kleenex placed over him, painted gold with water colours (try it -- it works quite well!), and made sure he was locked up for two years (which actually extended for 10, because I forgot about it).

Certainly but not time enough for more training. Unless Luke conceals Vader's revelation all throughout that period.
