No love for Star Trek V?

It's not a bad movie but it's almost certainly the worst Star Trek movie (although there is competition for that spot). It suffers from executive meddling, issues with the SFX company, and some poor story choices. I think there's the basis for an excellent movie in there but it needed a lot more work to get there.

I think that's it in a nutshell. The ingredients are all there, but it seemed whatever could go wrong did. I keep harping on it, but one of those ingredients, the special effects, can be easily fixed in this day and age. Paramount is probably worried they'd be throwing money away, but I actually think a lot of fans would buy a 'Remastered Edition-Blu Ray'. I find a certain fondness for this movie among a lot of fans, warts and all. But the bad special effects are just unworthy of a Star Trek film, they are that bad. I think a lot of fans would love to see this movie with proper effects.

They are unworthy of any film from the last 35 years. I still can't get my head around just how badly done they are, they just undermine the film at every turn.

That being said I would like the film a lot more with competently done FX, but as it stands it's still my least favourite Trek movie.

Even just reworking the horrific existing motion control photography with good CGI of the Enterprise and BoP would be a major improvement.

Yeah, it's all just bad. And like I said, with computer technology today, they probably could redo the effects at a minimal cost.

The only special effects scene I liked that was done for TFF was when the shuttlecraft is approaching the Enterprise toward the beginning and they show the Enterprise near the moon. That was a pretty nice shot. But that was it.

The whole return to the ship from Nimbus III, the fake me out streaking star warp effect (I guess they were trying to emulate TNG but did a bad job with it), the ship going to warp and ugh, the center of the galaxy scenes, all bad. Just bad.

The shot of the Enterprise in orbit of Sha Ka Ree when "God's" light column bursts from the surface is pretty nice.

I like the look of the Great Barrier, but it needs some updating.

Best effects shot in the film for me is right at the end where you briefly see the Enterprise pulling away from the planet with the BoP behind, why couldn't the rest be like that?

I have much love for final frontier. It explores the bond of friendship between the core trio, better than any other movie. Three old men who have become family to each other.

Also that line "maybe god's not out there, maybe he's right here, human heart", is so very true to the ethos of star trek.

Sure there's clunky humor and a bunch of plot contrivances (sending Kirk out in a semi-functional ship) but it's still my favourite of the trek movies. YES. FAVOURITE.

Ha-ha. Don't feel bad. I always tell people that I'm one of the 10 people that liked Nemesis. So there's nothing wrong with being the exception when it comes to your favorite movies.

Agreed!

I like both TFF and NEM!

I'm also quite fond of ENT, TOS season 3 and lots of other things "popular fan opinion" say "IZ TEH SUX!!1!1"

I really could care less what others think of my tastes. I'm here to have fun, not win a "like minds contest."

Oh, I also love TLJ and thought R1 was awful!

:shrug::lol:

Ha-ha. I can even watch Spock's Brain without batting an eye. Sometimes you just have to go with it

I always find it odd that people object to the character of Sybok. I put Sybok as one of the most well-developed and well-acted antagonists in the entire film series. Lightyears ahead of Chang, Ru'afo, Shinzon, Nero, The Borg Queen and (as much as I like watching him) Kruge. Sybok was unique, had an interesting personality, and very different motivations (from the usual "crazed revenge angry mean bad guy")

A lot of fans were stung by the notion that Spock would have a half-brother nobody would know about. I always wonder if these folks ever watched Star Trek. One of Spock's PRIMARY character traits is he is an extremely private and (logically of course) prideful person about his past and his culture.

This is the guy who was a surprise a minute:

1. Oh yeah, my inner eyelid! Not blind!!
2. Uuuhhhh....it has to do with ummmmmm.....biology.....
3. Oh, I forgot to mention...Vulcan's Ambassador to the Federation and his wife are my parents.
4. Perhaps I can figure out what's wrong with Van Geldar using this telepathic technique you've never heard of
5. Don't worry...I can mind-meld my soul into you before I die
6. I'm married.
7. No worries, gentlemen. My blood is based on copper.

I mean...really? It came as an off putting surprise to fans that Spock would never have discussed that he had a blood relative who had been such a disgrace and embarrassment that he was banished from his home planet?

I find that to be completely in Spock's character and completely appropriate.

watched it the day it came out. didn't watch it again and can't imagine doing so unless Crow T Robot and Tom Servo get involved.

You really should revisit it. There's far more good there than you might realize, especially after 30 years.

I would, if it there was an official edit ending with it just being another goofy Holodrama being watched by Riker. "Computer, add more bean jokes and replay." Mr. Frakes if you're reading this, could you please make this happen?

In Lethe, the Vulcan Science Academy admissions guy seems to somehow also not know that Sarek has a third sibling. He specifically mentions Spock as the other child of Sarek when he presents Sarek with his terrible choice. An argument could be made that Sybok was older and already flunked his chance at the academy, but I just felt it was the current writing staff doing everything they could but un-canonizing V.

One can rationalize that Sybok was a taboo topic by that point, with everyone politely declining to acknowledge the Black Sheep We Do Not Speak Of. Certainly, in the context of that discussion on DISCO, Sybok was not relevant to the issue at hand so one can certainly understand why the Admissions Guy would refrain from mentioning Sarek's prodigal son to his face.

For what it's worth, I've referenced Sybok in the books and nobody at CBS has ever asked me to avoid mentioning him.

it is cool you got him mentioned. I can't help but wish Lethe had included, however:

Vulcan Admissions Dude: "By the way Sarek, How'se the child of your first wife, I mean.. not-your-first wife? I thought I saw his meditation group selling kreyla out the back of a van the other day. Is he living long and prospering? Give my best to his Vulcan Princess mother!"

Sarek: Walks away, suppressing various emotions.

But he used no mind control AT ALL.
I dunno, man. He conjured some kind of image of Spock's birth & Bones' dad on his deathbed. That shit weren't no holodeck recreation. It came from Sybok projecting some brainwavy shit.

It's always been clear to me that there was a telepathic technique. Even if you just want to call it "brainwashing on warp power", it was enabled by his unusual and extremely strong powers.

You have a valid point there. I suppose the question then would be, were those images he conjured some form of covert mind control, or did they just come directly from the person's mind and Sybok somehow was able to project those thoughts into physical form? Because even if Sybok helped me deal with the pain of losing my father or the rejection thereof, and showed me images of my father based on my recollections of him, I'm still not going to help Sybok on his nutty quest to find God unless I was being coerced to.
