1) Historically, Star Wars has been an "event" series. Cramming two movies six months apart from each other works for Marvel, but audiences are not used to that from Star Wars.
2) We didn't even get a teaser trailer until three months before the movie's release and the marketing push was halfhearted at best.
3) Early buzz was mediocre at best.
4) The movie was released in the wake of Infinity War and Deadpool 2, both of which are making a zillion dollars. It's a crowded marketplace and Fox absolutely punked Disney by moving Deadpool's date.
