WNMHGB Set Plans Reconstruction

Firebird

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
This is a project I've been working on for some time. The design of the main corridor set only seen briefly in the second TOS pilot "Where No Man Has Gone Before" has always been intriguing to me. Unfortunately, I have never been able to find a scan of the official set plans. As such, I've endeavored to reconstruct the set layout based on the on-screen footage, as well as the existing set layouts from the series for the individual pieces.

This is my reconstruction of the main corridor set, with Sickbay, transporter room, and the briefing room. Careful examination of the available footage showed a step down at the far end of the straight corridor. Accompanying this with the mention in the book Inside Star Trek that the sets for the second pilot stretched across stages 15 and 16 at Desilu-Culver made me draw the conclusion the step-down was the connection point of the two stages.

The next image is a roughly-scaled placement of the sets within the official schematic of stage 15 that's available on the Culver Studios' website.

I'm open to any comments or changes that I could make to improve the drawings. :techman:

Made some minor tweaks to the transporter room to better reflect what we see on screen, as well as repositioning some wall flats at the end of the corridor:

Question: Where did you get the top-down schematic of the WNMHGB briefing room? Is that something you found somewhere, or did you make it yourself? And to your knowledge, is it to proper scale?

I got it from an old issue of Star Trek: The Magazine; they had a briefing section on the Pike-era Enterprise, and they included that schematic with the orthographic render. I had to do a little editing to the original version, because they presented the drawing as a finished room on the ship, and not as the set (moved walls around, removed part of another). As far as scale, I have no idea. The scan I made was far larger than the setplans, so I had to re-scale it based on the doorways in the rest of the rooms.

Here is the briefing room schematic I plugged into the overall set layout, without any rescaling. A bunch of color correction was needed to make it pure black & white instead of the original blue using Microsoft Paint and Windows Image Viewer. I don't have the budget for photoshop, so I have to do all of this the hard way.

I actually didn't know about GIMP, but now I'm taking a look at it, thanks!

As far as the turbolift, I'm not quite sure what you mean. Are you saying the turbolift itself needs to be rotated, or does the doorway need to be moved? I'm fairly certain the door placement is correct based on the following screenshots:

Overhead shot, showing turbolift door, with green pipe and olive-drab door to the left: http://tos.trekcore.com/hd/albums/1x03hd-alt/wherenomanhasgonebeforehdalt0087.jpg

Long shot down the corridor, you can see the matching red turbolift door, green pipe, and olive-drab door at the far end of the hall: http://tos.trekcore.com/hd/albums/1x03hd-alt/wherenomanhasgonebeforehdalt0079.jpg

^^ Sorry, was referring to the bridge turbolift as seen here
The edge of the turbolift alcove lines up with the centerline of the CO chair/helm station

Oh, gotcha - thanks for pointing that out! I actually didn't do any changes to the bridge at all, I just took that straight from the Journey to Babel plans since I was mainly concerned with the corridor and the connected sets.

Ahh, okay. Yeah, I've got that issue of ST:The Magazine as well, as I've always stashed it away for the day I tackle The Cage or WNMHGB sets. I don't know how accurate those top-downs are, so one day I'll verify the accuracy when I get around to building this set in 3D. Actually, this schematic of yours has got me considering doing pilot versions of the Bridge sooner than I had originally planned....

The only thing I'm dreading about creating those bridges is reverting all the damn buttons from their Season 2/3 colored "ice-tray" buttons to the Pilots/Season 1 "prismatic" buttons. Why did they have to change all those buttons? WHYYYYY??? :wah:

EDIT: Actually it looks like they used even different control panel buttons on the pilots! The large, rectangular "aircraft" buttons w/ labels! Oh, what a chore that will be.

In addition to that, the port-side railing nearest the main viewer was shortened to only have 2 out of the regular 3 segments. You can see that in the shot here. The main viewer is also shifted counter-clockwise to be directly in front of the helmsman as seen here.

@Donny - looks like it's not just buttons and control panels that got changed...

I think James Goldstone adjusted the “command module” to suit his blocking and sight-lines, much as Marc Daniels did in “Spock’s Brain”.

At least I hope so. Otherwise, the bridge is a series of ever-shifting quantum realities. (The Borg are everywhere! We won’t go back!)

Forgive me. I was out of line.

I’m really excited by this project. The small E proposed by the first pilot has intrigued me for a while, with the Captain’s quarters, transporter room, and briefing lounge seemingly crammed into the B/C deck area. Nothing in WNMHGB would contradict that and these plans would flesh that out.

Sorry to hijack your thread @Firebird, but this does being up an interesting question. Do we take this shift of the bridge stations in this episode as canon for this time period of the Enterprise? If so, it looks pretty wonky with the helm not in line with the view screen. Damn them for not thinking we’d be sitting here 50 years later contemplating making our own stage plans or 3D models! Didn’t they realize what Trek would mean to us?? ;)

But your purpose, Firebird, is to simply draw the set layout and not an in-universe set of plans, correct?

You knew I would have to chime in here, lol. The only changed to the "ice-tray" style buttons on the Science, Communications, Engineering and Environmental stations (the stations that were mostly on camera). The rest had the original prismatic buttons except when a prismatic fell off and it was replaced with an "ice-tray" style.

No worries on the hijack, Donny! Yes, I’m more concerned with the real-world production aspect of the design. I leave the in-Universe interpretation to your capable hands.
