Oh, Xander, you idiot!
Although Ben was acting kind of stupid too. But he did come to his senses, just a couple of seconds too late. Speaking of too late, why didn't the sheriff shoot Xander when he saw he was about to pull the trigger? He had plenty of warning.
I like how the mermaids turn out to have submission gestures/rituals for ending conflicts short of death. That's a behavior commonly found in animal species -- and in humans too, though our use of weapons too often leads to fatal results before surrender can be given. The creators have put a lot of thought into their portrayal of the mermaids, and it's interesting that we're learning it a little at a time. The revelation that they use hand signals helps explain how they communicate underwater when they don't seem to have a spoken language.

Eh, after all he's been through I don't blame him...and heck, if Ben hadn't interfered he'd only have killed his actual target instead of wounding Donna.
I think his behavior was a side effect of Ryn's Siren Song messing with him.
A surprisingly low-key finale. The big action climax was last week; this was more about tying off plot and character loose ends and relationship arcs. The big events were the two major character deaths, which both happened relatively early in the episode, and the rest was pretty slow and quiet.
I didn't quite buy Maddie's decision to walk out on Ben. She knows that he's acting crazy because of the effect of the Siren Song. If anything, she should be sticking with him closer than ever, keeping a careful eye on him to make sure he doesn't hurt himself again. So the semi-breakup just felt like a contrived, by-the-numbers attempt to generate conflict. It's unusual for anything in this show to just not work, but this just didn't work.

I had the same response. It seems odd to say that an ep that featured two deaths, a break-up, and a reveal was low-key, but, yeah, this was basically an extended epilogue to last week's ep, which felt more like a big season finale than this one did. As you said, this week's ep was mostly about dealing with the aftermath of last week's ep while laying the groundwork for next season . ...
Maybe it's because so many of the "twists" had already been foreshadowed so heavily? Donna was already at death's door, we already knew that the siren song had dangerous side-effects, that Helen was related to the mermaids somehow, that Maddie was not happy about Ben's growing obsession with Ryn. This ep just kinda confirmed lots of stuff we pretty knew much knew already . ...
But I'll be back for Season Two.
It does feel like a strong season just kinda fizzled out at the end. Decker's fate was an unsatisfying end to his arc, and it's weird that the threat from the government has just disappeared from the story. You'd think the mermaid attack on the government's boat crew would've brought the Feds out in even greater force.
It's also weird how little anyone seems to care that Xander murdered Donna. She may not have been his target, but it's hardly an accident; he intended to kill someone and a different person got killed as a result. I get that the sheriff can't publicly reveal what happened, but letting Xander walk away with a slap on the wrist hardly seems commensurate.

Well, maybe Mermaids have an "Eye for an Eye" style thing. One of theirs killed an innocent man (Xander's dad) and now the one who pushed for the attack on the Humans has died as a result.

Okay, I finally watched the last episode tonight...Decker didn't completely deserve what happened to him, and we can't totally blame him for thinking Donna loved him or anything since it's clear the Siren Song destabilized his mind.
And we are left wondering if Maddie's dad just told Ben's dad everything.

And it's still unclear exactly how much Ben's dad already knows about their family's history with the mermaids. He hid the truth about Helen, so I wouldn't put it past him to know a lot more about the mermaids than he is letting on.
Okay, just watched all 10 episodes yesterday and today. (I decided to watch it based on the recommendations a few months ago on the top half of page 1 of this thread.)
Episode 4 was an amazingly tidy ending. I guess Freeform liked it so much that they decided to ask for more afterwards. The funeral episode was very well done.
The love triangle aspect was handled quite impressively. I cringed every time it came up, but I wound up enjoying so many of those scenes. For the most part, it wound up feeling very honest and friendly and genuinely loving. (And yeah, huge props for the relationship between Maddie and her dad.)
They set up a few things for a second season, but I'll be super impressed if they can really pull it off. The current conflict between Maddie and Ben is one of the few things that doesn't ring true, so that can't last long. And it'll be a challenge to have Ryn be quite as interesting a character the second time around. Not just because it'll be our second time seeing her, but presumably she'll be far more human next time.

No season 2 thread for this show? It's been back on for a couple of weeks now. It's okay so far, but there was a significant flaw in tonight's episode...
When Maddie's mother goes to her addiction support group and sees Ben there seeking help for his addiction to Ryn's song, she then goes home and blabs about it to her husband and then later to Maddie. From what I've seen of the process on shows like Elementary, the first rule of such meetings is that they're absolutely confidential. Outing anyone else's attendance of such meetings is a profound violation of the trust that the process depends upon. Maddie's mother has supposedly been in recovery for some time, so she should certainly be aware of that. And I don't think the intent was that she was acting inappropriately by violating that confidence; the script didn't treat it as anything out of the ordinary. So this plot point was a serious failure of research.
Yeah, somebody should have called the mom on blowing the whole "anonymous" part of the meetings.
This season seems to be moving a bit slowly so far, but I guess they're still dealing with the consequences of last season while laying the groundwork for the season. Hopefully it will kick into gear once they've finished introducing new characters and subplots and such.
