Spoilers Siren- Season 1

I don't think Ben's mom is the Big Bad, since it's clearly a major government/military operation. It's more likely that there will be some dilemma involving the possibility of a cure for her. Like, maybe Decker will convince Ben's dad to help him trap Ryn and Donna by offering him a cure for his wife.

Even Decker himself being the Big Bad seems unlikely, the closest thing we have is that Navy Admiral but he's shown to be less malicious and more just not realizing the Mermaids are sentient beings.

If anything I could see Decker actually ending up helping Ryn and co. They did hint a few times when he was holding Donna that he was at least a bit sympathetic towards her. Once he actually comes face to face with the sisters actually, and talks to them, I could see him changing sides.

(Oh, the expatriate Washingtonian in me is also enjoying all the Pacific Northwest references: Bremerton, Post Angeles, the Huskies, etc.)
I like the coastal setting, you can almost smell the fish. Helps fill that gap left by Surface, Invasion and to some extent Haven.

BTW, after checking out the cast online I had to smile when I realized when Eline Powell was on Game of Thrones, a rather memorable role given its brevity. And Donna is Angela from Netflix's Lost in Space but I didn't recognize her, it's a pretty different performance. Calvin is Agent Demos on Supergirl...

I recognized "Angela" from SIRENS almost immediately, but I watched binge-watched both shows within days of each other so the memories were fresh in my mind.

Okay, that's given a new development as to why the Scientist Boss is so intent on seeing Donna again. It's not wanting payback on being played by her...he's become addicted to the Siren Call. Or if not addicted, then easily influenced by it.

And the potential of what mermaid DNA can do for Ben's mom was predictably brought up...

So Decker isn't working for the Evil Government Types after all, but pursuing his own personal obsession with Donna. I guess that's not surprising. It is a bit surprising that Ben confronted him right off, instead of going through the usual weeks of secret-keeping. (How long is this season?) It's cool that Decker is hard to define as either a bad guy or a good guy. There's a lot of moral ambiguity in these characters, which makes the show interesting. Donna sees humans as the enemy, but her reasons for it are understandable. Ryn is torn between her loyalties. Helen is taking care of the mermaids but has her own agendas that are in conflict with Ben & Maddie's. The fisherman guy whose name I forget is Ben's friend, but he's determined to hunt down his mermaid as a prize rather than seeing her as a person. And Ben's parents seem to basically mean well but have differences of opinion with him about their work, or about Maddie. I wonder why it is that Ben's mother has such a problem with Maddie. It sounds like it has to do with her stepfather, but Ben's father said he was really close to her stepfather. Lots of complicated dynamics. (Including whatever weird romantic triangle is forming among Ben, Ryn, and Maddie. It's odd to see Maddie showing signs of jealousy about Ben and Ryn when Ryn is clearly more attracted to Maddie.)

It's only 10 episodes, so we're 60% done already. Frankly it's better when seasons are as short as mini-series, means they don't stretch things out unnecessarily.

I loved the way Ryn imitated Maddie kissing Ben.

Xander doesn't see her as a person but I'm not sure of his motivation. From his POV, no one believes his story including Ben (as far as he knows) and the secret is endangering his friend Chris. I think there could there be some different reasons he might be interested in finding her.

It's odd to see Maddie showing signs of jealousy about Ben and Ryn when Ryn is clearly more attracted to Maddie.)
But Ryn didn't tell Maddie she loves her. :)

The whole reveal of the mermaids' song being like a drug was interesting. That being why Decker is so determined to find Donna was not what I expected.
So I wonder if the military is after the mermaid's stem cells then or if there's still more to whatever they're up to?

Okay, now we know there are definitely Mer-Men and they have weapons for fighting. And it's become more personal with Xander's dad being killed by their warrior.

I love how Maddie didn't even try to hide things from her dad and just got Ryn to show him the truth.

Well, this show is going in an unexpected direction. Up to now, we thought the mermaids were an endangered species at the mercy of the secret military project, but now it turns out they can fight back. This is building up toward a potential interspecies war. I gotta say, I never expected a show about mermaids to be more like a horror story than a romantic fantasy.

I'm glad that Maddie told the truth to her father and brought him into the loop. Good to have the trust restored between them. On the other hand, the plot with Xander and his father didn't do much for me, since I don't recall seeing the father since the first or second episode.

Yeah, I was surprised how quickly Maddie just came clean with her dad.
The mer-man's appearance was a surprise, and I got a big kick out of them using what appeared to be narwhal horns as spears.
So I wonder what they did with the crew of the military (navy?) ship?
From the preview it looks like Xander might find out Ryn is a mermaid, that should be interesting considering the events of this episode.
I thought it was interesting that they had Decker listening to Donna's song on his computer. I guess that must be his way of getting his fix now that he's not around her.
I love the fact that this show is actually managing to surprise me each week.

I suppose it's not like she had another choice.

Kind of convenient, though, that the merman apparently took longer to develop a humanlike lower torso out of the water than the mermaids do. Not quite being even-handed with the nakedness there.

So I wonder what they did with the crew of the military (navy?) ship?

When the fishing crew buried Xander's father at sea, I made a crude joke to myself: "Hey, the mermaids have something to eat now!" So who knows?

Yeah, although he seemed to be able to shake it off pretty easily when his phone rang. So maybe the Sirens' song isn't quite as lash-me-to-the-mast addictive as portrayed in The Odyssey.

Yeah -- it's a very different show from what I was expecting, and surprisingly good.

Interesting choice, to spend a whole episode on the memorial for the character who died last week, and to explore its impact on all the characters. That's nice to see, in a medium that too often trivializes death or glosses it over. It also fits this show, since it's set in a small town and it would be a close-knit community.

Of course, another way of looking at it is that they were really saving money by doing an episode almost wholly in one setting and focused on conversations rather than action. But then, I've always felt that budget limitations can be a good thing for TV and film, because they require a greater focus on characters and ideas and emotions rather than spectacle and action. Often, the most interesting story of all is two people in a room confronting each other. Or in this case, a bunch of people in a room.

I suspect the money-saving episode was partly to make up for the big action and FX last week, but maybe it's also saving up for a big finale. It looks like the merfolk are planning a strike on the town.

Yeah, that really surprised me too. I was expecting maybe a quick funeral and a scene or two of Xander grieving before we got back to all of the other stuff going on. Luckily the writing and acting were strong enough that they were able to carry the episode without any big action scenes.

They did a good job with it but I was still getting a little antsy for something more. Maybe a sex addiction workshop for Calvin...
