TWOK definitely is not.
I am sad that Nemesis ended the TNG movie franchise, but I'm glad that movie never got made. It just sounds so incredibly contrived and unimaginative. The Trek universe should be big enough that people don't just happen to run into each other like that.
Of course that never stopped Worf from popping up for every TNG movie after Generations, which I also didn't like.
If having a subscription to something is the bar, In 1987, 10 year old chimp watched Encounter at Farpoint with nothing but a rabbit ear antenna on his TV.
But really, we’re just quibbling over distribution format. Smart TVs and streaming boxes have blurred the lines so that such distinctions I don’t think matter. The fact is, we have an officially licensed show, professionally made, and in active production. I think that’s an accomplishment in and of itself considering the state of the franchise after ENT. I’m anxious for the blu rays so I can start watching it.
Yes, but there is a difference.
Back in 1987 they managed to come up with something new and interesting. They managed to use TOS as a launch pad to new exciting adventures not so far in the future from TOS but still keep what was essential from TOS and adapt it into new stories with new interesting characters and new adventures in an expanded universe.
What we have had in recent years are just tired, messed-upp attempts to re-create TOS without everything which made TOS interesting and without everything which made TNG, DS9 and Voyager interesting.
Surely that's subjective. And with a forth Kelvin movie on the way and second season of Disco, I'd say they must be popular enough.
It may be regional. The box office totals for the last three movies in the US went down. In 09 they made $257m, in 13 they made $228m and in 16 they made $158m

Right now it is, but it will go to the free channels, just like TNG did, and DS9, and VOY and ENT.
When TNG started, the only way to watch it was tofd buy or rent the VHS from Villiage Video.
Maybe it’s different in the US, but here, you had to pay for Sky One if you wanted the latest shows.
In the US you never had to pay for it. It was just on the basic tv channels. As of now there is no plan for discovery to be released to television. It will remain on cbs all access only.

It's the shape of things to come. Marvel got there first with a host of Netflix-exclusive shows and soon Lord of the Rings and Star Wars will have series' on similar subscription services.
That's the business model that is being pursued right now, for good or ill.
CBS is just one of many in that game.
Many people already have Netflix. Hardly anyone had cbs.
Not too long ago hardy anyone had Netflix. Soon hardly anyone will have Disney's new streaming platform, and how many people have Amazon Prime to watch Lord of the Rings?
There are the big three that many people have, Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. They're generally worth the price because of the quantity of shows they have. Cbs is another service you have to get just for only one show. I'm just speaking for myself of course
