Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Sunday's work: the wooden box with carved details seen in both Kirk and Spock's cabin. Again, I didn't agonize over getting the same exact patterns and sculpts. I just made sure we get at least an overall impression:

Almost missed this shot in "The Enemy Within". I was scrolling through the episode at random when I came across what is perhaps our best view of the box in the series.

And here it is, again, in Spock's quarters.

You're getting quite good at ZBrush!

Amazing work, as usual. Careful...one of these days, if you continue to consistently put out the phenomenal work you are, people will begin to yawn. ;)

The quartermaster probably has a whole crate full of these boxes, acquired from a shifty looking alien with big ears...
I was thinking, while on leave at a star base, each of them were cornered by a persistent Cyrano Jones looking to unload his stock. “Friend Starfleet! Can I interest you in...um...a mysterious wooden box?”

"One of these would make a fine jewellery box for your mother...or cufflink store for your father!"

BTW, have we ever seen cufflinks in any episode of Star Trek?

Kirk in "A Piece of the Action" I think had'em.
Does the Dixon Hill simulation count? Nicky "The Nose" in FC wore cufflinks.
Wouldn't be surprised if a couple characters in "Far Beyond the Stars" weren't wearing them too.

As for someone wearing cufflinks in the 23rd or 24th century as part of their daily wardrobe, I can't think of it.

Also, Gary Seven wore them in "Assignment: Earth"

A few more props for Kirk's quarters.

Here's the spread from "The Corbomite Manuever" that I was replicating:

I made the spines feature titles that are were mentioned in Trek or were an influence on Trek:

1) Horatio Hornblower for it's influence on Trek as a series, as stated by Gene Roddenberry (although I should probably make a few more titles in the series instead of just copies of "Captain Horatio Hornblower"; I accidentally saved over my base texture file so I'm just being lazy at the moment),
2) A Tale of Two Cities (even though Spock later gives Kirk another copy in TWOK)
3) Moby Dick (an obvious favorite of Khan during his exile on Ceti Alpha V, but every good captain should have this book lying around)
4) The Collected Poems of D.H. Lawrence (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)
5) Paradise Lost and 6) Paradise Regained (Space Seed)

I'm not going to make up many more. I tried to do a whole bookcase for my TWOK project and quickly got exhausted from trying to make a hundred or two unique books. We didn't see a ton of books in TOS anyway, so it's no big deal. Just a few to throw around Kirk's quarters.

And, here's reference for the container to the right of the globe in the above shot. I have no idea what pattern was on the container, so I found a pattern online that I thought fit pretty nicely.

So, tonight, along with the usual showcase screenshots of whatever prop I've finished, I'm gonna give a rundown of my process...
I just wanted to say, I really appreciate you sharing your process. I have all kinds of issues UV unwrapping my models and getting things looking good in UE4, so to see it done so professionally is very humbling. Because I'm such a noob at making normal maps I tend to just add more polys, which in a VR environment is a nightmare :P
I'm only just beginning to realise that the bulk of what makes 3D models look exceptional has little to do with the modelling itself, it's actually all down to the numerous texture layers that build up the subtle details. I guess I need to give Substance Painter a try :D

So, I honestly need a break from sculpting/modeling all the props around Kirk's cabin, so I figured I'd get a start on the bathroom. I've blocked it out, so-to-speak, representing what I've been throwing around in my head regarding the design of the TOS bathroom attached to every officer's quarters.

Starting with what we know: we only get a couple of glimpses on what's behind the bathroom door in all of TOS. They are, in the following order, from a deleted scene in Kirk's cabin in "The Corbomite Manuever":

A memorable scene from Kirk's cabin in "Mirror, Mirror":

And a scene from "Elaan of Troyius", in Uhura's quarters:

In both the shots from Kirk's cabin, we see a familiar wall with a built-in shelf that we first saw in Pike's cabin in "The Cage", and later in Koridian/Kodos's cabin in "The Conscience of the King". (I've measured and compared every appearance of the wall, and they are, in fact, the same set piece)

Although there is no evidence of this shelf-wall in Uhura's bathroom, I love the fact that we get to use a recycled set piece from Pike's cabin, so it's definitely going in.

Here's is my mock-up, without any detailed modeling, starting with a labeled overhead view:

And here are some shots from a few different angles:

The bathroom space is exactly 6 feet across, and this works well with the briefing room or another cabin next door. Next to the bathroom door, we have a sink console that will be built into one of the wall-mounted cabinet/shelves we see in the sickbay ward. Embedded into the wall above it, we have a large mirror that is commonplace in most modern-day bathrooms. To the right of the sink, we have the commode with a decorative grille dividing the two spaces. And then, to the right of the commode built into the perpendicular wall, we have a cylindrical unit which will be the shower (either traditional, or sonic, or both...I haven't decided yet). Note I am using the commode I featured in the shuttlecraft as a placeholder for now.

The walls opposite the commode and sink will feature a towel rack, and a laundry chute/transporter, which I'm still debating on adding or not.

I'm really digging the space so far, and I'm open to suggestions, however I'm pretty set that this will be the layout. I do have some questions I wouldn't mind everyone pitching in their thoughts to help me in a few areas though:

1) Should there be a trash receptacle? I'm thinking in the 23rd century on a starship, paper waste would be almost nonexistent, thanks to technology. Anyone disagree and see a need to have a paper trash receptacle in the bathroom?

2) Laundry "chute"? Should each bathroom contain a small pull-out slot where laundry is placed and then transported/beamed to the laundry processing center aboard ship? Or should there just be a few of these in key areas in the corridor of the living quarters decks in which crew members drop off their laundry at once a week? Maybe senior officer's have their own chutes, but other crew members have to take their laundry to the deck-based chutes?

3) Shower: Sonic, or traditional, or both? Sonic showers don't canonicly appear until TMP. We see Archer taking a water-based shower on the NX-01. And we hear about a crew-member of Psi-2000 in "The Naked Time" frozen to death in the shower with his clothes on, implying that at least on that outpost they were using water-based showers. I had considered adding a bathtub as well, but there really isn't room for both a tub and a shower, unless it's a combined tub/shower like most modern bathrooms have. But I don't really like that idea. I think a shower unit sans tub is more appropriate for a 2260s Constitution-class ship. They're not supposed to be as luxurious as the later Connie-Refit or Galaxy class.

4) I'm thinking about shortening the divider grille just a smidgen and removing the bulkhead above it, so that an officer could hang his clothes over the divider while showering. That will give the space a more lived-in feel.

Thoughts? Is there anything I'm missing?

Nice! And I like the idea of removing the wall over the divider grill.

I'm puzzled by the placement and especially the dimensions of the shower unit, though. It just looks too shallow to accommodate an actual human being. Might it make more sense to move the shower to the corner of the space (upper right on your bird's-eye view), which would allow it to protrude further into the room?

I assume the shower would be a full circle but it does look very cosy, regardless!

Regarding the laundry chute it's not out of the question as we do see a disposal chute for Kirk's overloading phaser in Conscience of the King. However, given that cabins don't appear to be networked to the food processor system (Mirror Kirk has a drinks dispenser but every other time food is brought in to occupants from outside) I think it unlikely that the ship would be able to house the infrastructure needed to have criss-crossing chutes throughout the decks. Maybe just for select officers?

I must admit, I've always been against having ensuite bathrooms for the TOS crew: The deleted scene with Rand clearly shows it as a closet (she's hanging up laundered shirts) and there are so many instances of that door leading out into a corridor that it would make the presence of a bathroom for even officer's quarters impossible to be consistent.

Uhura's quarters that she gave up to Elaan were obviously special though and I think the key difference was that she had cojouled "Bobby (from the Man Trap) into expanding her quarters to include an ensuite, complete with an actual bath. It was for this reason that she gave up her cabin - otherwise why not simply house the Dohlman in any of the standard rooms that we saw in Journey To Babel?

Having said all that, I really dig the TOS decor you've used here! :techman:

I would just use the same combo sonic/wet shower we see in TMP. You have the set blueprints for it, and arguably that technology shouldn’t change much.

I think TMoST tells us laundry is recycled. I would go a step further and say everything is recycled. (I think it also says this in TMoST.) Have a recycling chute in each quarters and the recycling unit will break down what you put in into its constituent elements. Then the QM will issue replacements that you can pick up from him/her.

Artistically, having a laundry chute makes a lot of sense. May not be "canon" but definitely worth considering.

If small & efficient enough, I can see each restroom having it's own recycler. After all, the used water (and other human waste!) is already being broken down and recycled. It's possible that this could also break down laundry, uneaten food, muddy boots etc I suppose. I have to wonder though, is it really energy efficient to break down clothing into its constituent elements? In most cases, a bit of soap and water will do the trick just as well!

Looking at the overhead shot, my thoughts are that it looks like a lot of wasted space around the entrance. The practical reason for this makes sense as you just need something on the other side of the door. But in-universe, it's a little suspect of design.

What I think would work is to move the sink/mirror to the wall opposite the toilet. End the carpet at the divider and have solid-surface flooring in this area.

In the now empty area, create a kind of walk-through closet. Maybe an open rack, or wardrobe doors. That would make this area make more sense to me. There would be an actual place for uniforms and casual clothing as well as a sort of dressing area within the little entry-way that we see through the door.

I think it's smart to have the toilet where you do. If the bathroom were ever shown on the series, they would not have shown the toilet, so placing it where it's not visible from most likely angles is probably what they would have done.

I don't have much opinion one way or the other about the shower. I can believe either option. Also, we don't actually know whether or not the sonic showers we've seen are also fitted with plumbing. It could be that they always provide the option depending on what the user wants.

As far as laundry... I don't know if I buy that every bathroom has a chute that goes somewhere. I like the idea but it suggests a type of infrastructure that might be too extensive to believe. Also, if you consider that their clothing is probably made of futuristic fabrics that resist staining and whatnot, maybe there's a small cleaning unit that they can sort of sonically obliterate dirt and oils and whatever is on their clothing.

You might also consider putting in elements of reverse-continuity. Look at the bathrooms from later series and posit that they are referencing elements from the unseen TOS bathroom.
