S.J. Clarkson To Direct Next Star Trek Movie, First Female Director in (Movie) Franchise’s History

I'd hope they wouldn't consider paying her less than Justin Lin for example.
For sure she'll be getting paid less than Lin or Abrams. Not because she's a female, but because she's a new director as far as big budget Hollywood movies are concerned. An established director with a track record in Hollywood can get around 20M for one film. So there's a lot of money that can be saved in this area.

Do most people care who the director is, unless it's a Spielberg, Tarantino, Nolan type? I can't see it figuring much into the marketing plan.
Probably not. But I'm saying by hiring a female director they get a little extra publicity blurb of "first female director." It will make a few more headlines because of it IMO.

I don't know much about Clarkson, but I'm initial reaction to her hiring is positive.

Baird had directed two films.

But anyway, once you've been warned for trolling you're not really supposed to keep belabouring the same point.

Interesting.

Seems like Paramount is between devil and angel with these rumors about Tarantino and now this female director. I'll wait for something more definitive and official.
And I hope she doesn't direct the kirk's dad is back script.

Sure, not everyone will see the possibility of more movies of this trek as good news, everyone is entlitled to their different opinions.. however, to be fair, going to a kelvin trek fan board only to comment reasonably good news for its fans with a 'oh no I hoped they'd kill this trek for good because I hate it' may be a tad controversial...

Personally, I'd find it egocentric to want something to stop existing only because I'm not interested about it. With such logic, some franchises that have many fans should get deleted only because I don't get their success or they aren't my cuppa. What you gain from that? It's not like you are forced to watch these movies, anyway.

And I'm unsure how the demise of this trek would necessarily give hope to those trek fans like you who want a different direction. I have a feeling that, either way, you wouldn't get what you want EVEN it there was no more of this trek. However, getting more of this trek doesn't prevent them to do more with trek in general. The opposite.

You haven't been paying much attention for the past 15 years, huh? ;)

People with this attitude are not abundant, but they are loud, obnoxious, and could care less about what anyone else thinks or wants.

And yes, it's not enough that the element of the franchise that they struggle accepting simply goes into the "ignore" bucket for them...they absloutely actively want it to fail. Why?

1. It's more important for them to be proven "right" than any other consideration
2. The existence of franchise elements they don't like are perceived as blockers to the potential existence of other (as yet unknown / undeveloped elements) that they might like
3. It's important to them that the producers and creative folks in charge "get the message from WE THE FANS" about what is good and what is not
4. Because it's fun to drum up conflict and controversy from the safety of your keyboard by saying things you know are going to get a negative reaction.
5. Reasons, apparently

I for one am thrilled for the news. Star Trek movies are events for me and my family, and always have been. My sons are getting old enough now for me to share these events with, and to me it's very special to share this stuff with them like my dad did with me when I was growing up.

The malcontents and disgruntled can go pound for all I care. Bring on more Trek, and best of luck to S.J. Clarkson!!

Glad to see that Pegg doesn't have his pen on it.
It sounds like they might at least be using the storyline he and Doug Jung already finished for this film -- their premise brought George Samuel Kirk back from the dead, and then Tarantino walked in the door and pitched his own, wildly-differing version (which now appears to be back-burnered for the time being). Payne and McKay were uncredited contributors on Beyond, but I'm guessing that Pegg will likely still be intimately involved in whatever they finally develop, here.

Oh, so the guy actually had experience. Even worse.

Most television shot these days is shot very cinematic compared to what it was 20 years ago. Clarkson has plenty of experience in that area, and it's not a huge jump to directing a film. You just have more money and time is all.

TV is usually more character drama focused and less reliant on spectacle than film is.

Hopefully hiring a director with mostly TV experience means we're getting less action and more character.

Payne and McKay developed the script featuring George Kirk, Jung/Pegg had nothing to do with it.

Payne/McKay weren't involved with Beyond.

I could have sworn I saw their names in one of the trailers/commercials for Beyond.
I believe them and Orci were in the credits somewhere. I could be wrong about that.

A lot of times when people work on a project, but end up not contributing to it, they'll still get listed as "Producers" or something.

if I remember correctly Tarantino has some other filming commitments before he can do his own Trek movie, which probably made them decide to have this interim one with a script the essentially already had.

Yes, seems like his script needs more work. If they want him to direct as well (which doesn't seem very likely) they'd need to wait till he's got a space in his schedule. Paramount probably decided they needed a film sooner so are looking again at producing the George Kirk script JJ had lined up.

I'm glad there's going to be another Kelvinverse movie. They deserve to continue. I've no interest in Kirk's dad, time travel or the appalling Chris Hemsworth however. Hopefully that idea is dropped. This director is a good choice. She's directed a lot of great tv shows.
