S.J. Clarkson To Direct Next Star Trek Movie, First Female Director in (Movie) Franchise’s History

I hope they don't recast Chekov either. I want a nice little honor mention of him (promotion and reassignment to the Reliant would be absolutely lovely) and then bring back Jaylah and/or Carol, cuz the Enterprise is in need of some more full-time female representation, without being written as 'the girlfriend' in my opinion.

I vote for Jaylah. STID pretty much did reduce Carol to an extension of the male characters -- the love (or at least lust) interest for the hero and the daughter of the villain. It was an underwhelming treatment of the character and I have no interest in her return. But Jaylah was terrific and deserves plenty more development. Hopefully we'd actually learn the name of her species then.

On the other hand, nowhere is it written that every Kirk-era story has to focus on all seven traditional leads. Chekov, after all, was only added in season 2 and was in fewer episodes than any of the other core seven. And reducing the number of central characters by one could finally allow Sulu to be less marginalized and John Cho's talents to be less wasted. With Yelchin's loss, Cho is arguably the best remaining actor in the ensemble, yet he seems to get the least screen time.

Article says Tarantino is still on board for the fifth movie. My guess is the George Kirk script is ready to go much sooner, so they can release this while Tarantino gets to finish the other without being unnecessarily rushed (I suppose they can also explore a tangent story as well with the fifth).

It's being reported that Tarantino's film isn't in Kelvin at all. Since it's supposed to be based on a classic episode, that suggests it's not in Prime either, but a pure standalone. If it gets made at all, that is.

Fantastic news! So we get both ideas?I

Sooo glad the Kelvinverse will continue. The crew is just too good with too much potential not to do more. This is a big big moment for the Kelvinverse though. If it does well at the box office, I can see a new Kelvinverse film every 3 or 4 years for another 15 years or so. This one has to do well though -- it has to be good. Hope the new director and the time travel story that JJ loves are both homeruns.

And...we still get Tarantino. Very interestesting that his will be a stand-alone with a ton of creative freedom. I really wanted to see him use the Kelvin crew, but this is probably the right move.

And he's directing! Possibilities are endless.

Developing two films at once -- good for Paramount to go all-in on Star Trek. And CBS is of course building up small-screen Trek again.

Exciting times for the franchise.

I'd take Jaylah over Carol, but I'd rather not be forced to choose. There's plenty of room on the ship for two more women.
I hope they gave what's left of the Franklin to Jaylah though. it is kind of her home.

I’m interested to see what she brings to the franchise, plus I can’t wait to see the crew again. It will be a little sad that Checkov will probably not be in it for obvious reasons. :(

I hope Jaylah comes back. She was great and Carol not coming back bummed me out.

Yay a Kelvin continuation! I haven't heard of the director as such but I've watched pretty much everything she has directed, so there you go. I hope we see Jaylah again as well, she was the most interesting part of Beyond for me. I also missed Carol Marcus after Into Darkness, she was very good.

If they are going for the long rumoured George Kirk via time travel it'd be wonderful.

I think when/if the Tarantino film happens it will be something completely different. I do wonder if Paramount are trying to be a bit like Disney with their Star Wars release schedule? Of course whether they're actually successful at it or not is another matter.

For what it's worth, here's JJ's original announcement from July 17, 2016

I just hope the looming box office dissapointment of ST4 won't negatively effect Tarantinos script...:sigh:

That being said: It seems like they are lowballing with ST4. No accomplished director, but a tv director's first feature film. I guess they are heavily reducing the budget. Wich is IMO a good thing! Beyond's problem wasn't that it made only 340 mio. $ box office. The problem was that it cost 185 mio. to make in the first placr. If they manage to put out a Trek movie for 100-120 mio., those numbers suddenly look profitable again.

Just be prepared: Budget-wise this movie is probably closer to the old TNG era movies, than the bombastic blockbuster-sized movies JJ Abrams promised.

They wouldn't be making these movies if their number-crunchers weren't confident.

Paramount is desperate. They only have the Mission:Impossible, Transformers and the Star Trek franchise at the moment. They have to try to salvage them. They have no alternatives.

They swapped out their entire leadership - maybe the new ones are a bit more creative and know better how to handle their properties than the previous one did.

Still, they're not going to back a sure-fire loser.

Or at least, one would very much hope not.
