Makes sense that they'd do something to bolster interest in the Sequel Trilogy era. Looking forward to learning more about Phasma.

Why does everyone assume it is 2D?

BB-8 is 3D in the promo image.

    That's not 3D. It's 2D anime

Plus BB-8 does not look CGI.

It's got kind of a "cel-shaded" look, though.

BB-8 is clearly a 3D model in that image

Anime inspired can still be 3D.

BB-8 is clearly 3D cel-shaded style, you can see the depth of the model clearly.

Looks like hybrid 2D/3D cell shaded animation to me. But before everyone get's ahead of themselves remember that the first images released for 'Rebels' were just concept/"spirit of" art, not actual screenshots. This just looks like keyart and logo for branding purposes.

That said, if they're going the hybrid route (which is what some anime have been doing for a while) then it seems likely that all of the organic elements (characters, backgrounds etc.) will be traditional 2D cell animation while the non-organic elements (non-humanoid droids, vehicles, certain interior environments etc.) will be cell shaded 3D meshes.

Yeah and I get the feeling most people say 2D they mean animated cartoon not CGI cartoon.

I have no interest in this, but I submitted it to IMDb anyway since the series was missing.

I was hoping our next series would be between RoTJ and TFA, so I'm pretty happy with this news. The IGN article mentions that this will be around the same time as the Poe Dameron comic, so I wonder if we'll see any tie-ins to that.
The art style in the promo image reminds a little bit of the style of Legend of Zelda: Breath of Wild

    or Ni No Kuni 2

I like that they're using racing "planes" ala the Joe Johnson 'Rocketeer' movie, both because that feels stylistically very close to one of Lucas's main inspirations and gives us a unique and credible way to have a skilled fighter pilot character who grew up in a period of relative peace.

Side note: during this period Han was running a racing team himself and though this seems to be set after Kylo's fall and Han buggering off back to smuggling, it leaves the possibility open for some kind of connection. Maybe a role for Greer Sonnel in there somewhere?

    From that Star Wars link:
"In addition to Isaac and Christie, the voice cast includes actors Christopher Sean (Days of Our Lives), Suzie McGrath (East Enders), Scott Lawrence (Legion), Myrna Velasco (Elena of Avalor), Josh Brener (Silicon Valley), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Bobby Moynihan (DuckTales), Jim Rash (Community), and Rachel Butera (Tammy’s Tiny Tea Time)."

SNL Bobby? That's interesting. And hey, maybe we'll get to see Phasma do something memorable or awesome because Phasma is criminally underused in the ST.

Oh, damn. That was something on the wishlist of things to see in this rumored series. But then... why would they show that? We probably "saw" as much of that as we will ever see in The Last Jedi.

"Marc Buhaj, senior vice president, Programming and general manager, Disney XD, said, “Our colleagues at Lucasfilm have created a compelling narrative for an untold moment in the Star Wars galaxy, and we are excited to partner with them again on this new original series. Star Wars Resistance will bring viewers across generations an engaging story with heart, humor and both new and familiar characters.”

You know what Star Wars needs?

NOT more material. Too bad that is never going to happen.

That BB-8 is most definitely a 3D model, but it could be that the show is animated in 2D with some 3D elements (mechanical stuff, as its easier to create 3D models of machines to animate than it is to painstakingly draw and animate non-organic objects and have it look serviceable in a tv-series production), like in Futurama with the Planet Express ship.

However, I am pretty sure this is going to be a mostly 3D show with 2D backgrounds like Transformers RiD. It doesn't make sense to make a 2D animated series that is so heavily reliant on action and machines at the level of Star Wars because it would be prohibitively expensive to produce. I'm not too excited about that since cel shaded "anime" series tend to look bad (Transformers RiD looks okay sometimes, but the human characters look like butt), but artists are getting better at this type of animation with every new production. I'll do the whole 'cautiously optimistic' thing with this, given that previous 3D animators for Star Wars cartoons have been excellent. We might get something really special with series if they manage to produce a great looking cel shaded series.

If anyone wants to see what an excellent and absolutely BEAUTIFUL 3D anime series looks like, please check out Land of the Lustrous on Amazon Prime. It uses 3D characters with a mixture of 2D and 3D backgrounds. It is probably the best looking 3D production I've seen come out of Japan, and it really highlights what amazing things you can do in 3D that is impossible on a 2D schedule. It's one of the few series I've seen where if you pause it, you could believe that it was a 2D series and not some clunky looking video game cut scene.

Oh, and it just happens to be a great series in itself, in addition to being beautiful. I 100% recommend this. It appears that youtube has subbed episodes on it as well, if you don't have Amazon Prime.

That looks awesome. Thanks for the heads up. I'm gonna check that out. I would love to see the new series done like this. It's a vastly superior version of the animation style for the new 'Berserk' show.

I'm the group that doesn't consider this style 3D, even though it is. When I think 3D I'm thinking along the lines of computer animation like Rebels and Pixar stuff.
